Woody Allen is honoring his Annie Hall.
After Diane Keaton passed away on October 11th at the age of 79, the director shared a heartfelt remembrance of the Academy Award-winning actress, with whom he had a romantic relationship from 1969 to 1972.
Woody Allen wrote that while ‘most unique’ isn’t proper grammar, rules seem to bend when describing Diane Keaton. He described her as unlike anyone else, past or future, and said her presence and laughter brightened every room.
The Annie Hall director recalled meeting Keaton ahead of his 1969 Broadway show Play It Again, Sam.
He first saw her at an audition and was struck by her tall, slender beauty. He thought she reminded him of what Huckleberry Finn would look like if he were a stunning young woman – that was Keaton.
Although Allen and Keaton worked closely together – both in the original play and the 1972 movie version – Allen revealed it took more than a week for them to actually have a conversation. He explained that they were both shy, and that can make things awkward.
But, at long last, the two got dinner after rehearsal—and he fell head over heels.
She was incredibly charming, beautiful, and captivating, to the point where I wondered if I was losing my mind,” the 89-year-old explained. “I even asked myself if it was possible to fall in love so fast.
Keaton, appearing in eight of Woody Allen’s movies like *Sleeper*, *Manhattan*, and *Love and Death*, grew close to him and became someone he trusted to bounce ideas off of.
He explained that eventually, he started making movies just for Diane Keaton. He didn’t bother with critics or reviews, only caring about her opinion. If she enjoyed a film, he considered it a win as an artist.
He praised her perspective on art, her daring fashion sense and her love for life.
Allen noted that she was incredibly talented in both comedic and dramatic roles, and was also a skilled dancer and singer. Beyond performing, she was a creative force, excelling at writing, photography, collage, interior design, and filmmaking. On top of all that, she was a joy to be around.
He finished by saying that the world felt brighter when Diane Keaton was in it. Now that she’s gone, it feels a little sadder. Thankfully, we still have her films, and he can still hear her wonderful laugh in his memory.
Despite the controversy surrounding Allen’s relationship with Soon-Yi Previn, the adopted daughter of his former partner Mia Farrow, Diane stayed one of his most trusted friends.
After Allen was accused in 2018 of sexually abusing his daughter, Dylan Farrow—an accusation he denies—Diane Keaton publicly defended him. This happened while Allen was still with Mia Farrow and shortly after marrying Soon-Yi Previn in 1997.
As she wrote on Twitter at the time, “Woody Allen is my friend and I continue to believe him.”

I was so incredibly saddened to hear about Diane Keaton. She truly shaped my love for film – from the quirky charm of *Annie Hall* and the power of *The Godfather* films, to the hilarious *First Wives Club* and heartwarming *Baby Boom*, and even classics like *Father of the Bride* and *Something’s Gotta Give*. Her career was just legendary, a true Hall of Fame resume. I actually had the amazing opportunity to work with her years ago on an HBO pilot that sadly never made it to air, and she was even more wonderful as a person than she is on screen – incredibly down-to-earth, hilariously funny, and unbelievably talented. This year feels like we’re losing a whole era of Hollywood, a kind of magic we’ll never see again. There’s just no replacing actors like Gene Hackman, Robert Redford, or Diane Keaton. They were true originals who changed the game for a generation, and losing them feels like losing a connection to that golden age. My heart goes out to Diane’s family during this incredibly difficult time. Rest in peace.
