Brad Pitt plays Gerry Lane, a former UN investigator who finds himself stuck in a Philadelphia traffic jam – which quickly turns out to be caused by a full-blown zombie apocalypse.

What Happened to the World War Z Sequel?

A sequel to the 2013 film World War Z was planned, intended to be the first of three movies, but it was ultimately canceled in 2019. Filming was initially scheduled to begin in March 2019 in locations like Atlanta, Spain, and Thailand. Despite having Brad Pitt and a director on board, the project faced delays and was eventually scrapped. Paramount Pictures, the studio behind the sequel, decided to prioritize other large-scale films, such as the Mission: Impossible series. Brad Pitt was set to return as Gerry Lane, and Mireille Enos would likely have reprised her role as his wife. The rest of the cast for the canceled sequel remains unknown.

Details about a potential sequel were hard to come by. The first film, World War Z, ended with a vaccine being created, suggesting the world would begin to recover. Gerry Lane reunited with his family, and efforts to eliminate the zombies were progressing. A sequel could have explored the aftermath of the vaccine’s development, but it seems unlikely one will ever be made.

World War Z is streaming on Pluto TV.
