A new version of the film is in development with Ryan Coogler directing. The director recently shared some news about the eagerly awaited project.
Director Ryan Coogler recently discussed his plans for a reboot of a yet-unspecified series during an appearance on the Last Podcast on the Left. He expressed his long-held enthusiasm for the project, stating he’s eager to begin work. Coogler, whose latest film is the horror movie *Sinners*, also hinted that some episodes, if executed well, would be genuinely terrifying.
Coogler also mentioned he’s talked with Gillian Anderson, the original star of *The X-Files*, about returning for the reboot, but wouldn’t say if she’ll actually be in it. He said she’s fantastic and they’re hoping she can participate, though she’s currently busy with other projects. His goal is to create something amazing for longtime *X-Files* fans while also attracting new viewers.
Premiering on Fox in 1993 and created by Chris Carter, *The X-Files* centers around FBI Special Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. They investigate a collection of mysterious, unsolved cases – known as the X-Files. Mulder is the believer, convinced that the paranormal exists and that the government is hiding evidence of alien life.
Dr. Scully, a doctor and a natural skeptic, was initially brought in to disprove the work of Agent Mulder. However, their relationship changed over time, moving from disagreement to teamwork. Both characters faced evidence that made them question their beliefs and blurred the line between what’s real and what remains a mystery. Recently, in 2023, creator Chris Carter announced that Ryan Coogler is set to direct a new version of the show.
Original X-Files Actors Have Expressed Interest In the Reboot
Robert Duchovny, whose part on the show was lessened previously, says he’d consider returning as Agent John Doggett. He wonders what Doggett has been up to since we last saw him and feels the timing might finally be right, as he’s been too busy to return in the past. He added that Doggett is a character he particularly cares about, praising his strength.
The X-Files is streaming on Hulu. The reboot does not have a release date at this time.
