Gambit’s death in *X-Men ’97* was already a heartbreaking moment, but a recent announcement about season 2 makes it even more devastating. The show isn’t connecting to the main Marvel Cinematic Universe; instead, it’s continuing the story of the original *X-Men: The Animated Series* that aired from 1992 to 1997. Season 1 proved that even beloved characters from this classic team aren’t immune to permanent loss, as Gambit tragically gave his life on Genosha, deeply affecting his teammates.
The death of Gambit deeply affected Rogue, especially because she had chosen a romantic relationship with Magneto instead of remaining loyal to her X-Men team. Despite this tragedy, Marvel’s Brad Winderbaum hinted that Rogue and Magneto’s relationship will continue in season 2 of *X-Men ’97*. In an interview with *Collider*, Winderbaum mentioned that there will be “a lot of romance” between them, framing them as a “past team” in contrast to Scott, Jean, Storm, and Forge, who represent the future.
According to Brad Winderbaum, Season 2 of ‘X-MEN ’97’ will feature a significant amount of romance. He explained that Rogue and Magneto are together in the past, forming a team alongside characters from that era, while Scott, Jean, Storm, and Forge are set in the future.

Rogue & Magneto’s X-Men ’97 Romance Explained
As a huge fan of *X-Men ’97*, I was really surprised by the backstory they gave Magneto and Rogue in season one! It turns out they had a connection way before Rogue even became an X-Man. Her adoptive mom, Mystique, actually took her to Magneto in the Savage Land hoping he could help her manage her powers. Rogue quickly fell for him, and it made sense – he was the only one who could actually *touch* her without her absorbing their life force, thanks to his magnetic abilities. While their relationship eventually fizzled out as Rogue dealt with their complicated pasts, Magneto joining the X-Men brought them face-to-face again, and it’s clear there’s still a lot of history between them.
Magneto and Rogue have a history of romantic connection in Marvel comics, but their relationship wasn’t explored in the original *X-Men: The Animated Series*. The recent revival finally delved into this, causing complications for Gambit, who was also in love with Rogue – though by the time she chose him, it was too late to save their relationship. Now, with Gambit gone and Magneto and Rogue stuck in the past with a young En Sabah Nur, producers suggest they will be revisiting their romantic connection.
A surprising twist is that Gambit might return as Death, one of Apocalypse’s horsemen. This could make his earlier death in season one even more heartbreaking, especially if we see Magneto and Rogue falling in love again. Romance won’t be limited to them, though. We’ll also see Jean Grey and Scott Summers navigating a relationship in the future, and Storm and Forge exploring their connection in the present. This focus on romantic drama is a classic part of the X-Men, and it’s making fans even more eager for season 2 of *X-Men ’97*.
