Marvel has revealed a new story leading up to the second season of X-Men ’97. Fans are eagerly anticipating the continuation of this critically acclaimed animated series, which has been hailed as one of the best TV revivals of recent years. The first season ended with the X-Men separated across time, and suggested that Apocalypse plans to bring Gambit back to life as one of his powerful Horsemen.
Marvel Comics is releasing a five-issue comic series created by Steve Foxe and Salva Espin to connect seasons one and two of X-Men ’97. The series will expand on storylines from the first season and introduce new characters and teams before the new season begins. According to writer Steve Foxe, this prequel won’t shy away from the big cliffhanger ending of season one and will fully explore the new status quo. He expressed excitement about continuing to build the world of X-Men ‘97 with Espin and artist Matt Milla.
Marvel has revealed two official covers for the upcoming story. One is by artist Todd Nauck, and a variant cover comes from Jhony Caballero. The second cover is particularly interesting, as it hints at the return of an X-Man who previously died. Here are both covers, followed by an overview of the story.

The dramatic events of ‘Extinction Day’ have scattered the X-Men across time! This comic series continues the story from the animated show X-Men ’97, focusing on the mutants left behind in a hostile world where they are feared and hunted. Will they be able to survive, and where – or when – have they ended up? Any fan of X-Men ’97 won’t want to miss this adventure!
X-Men ’97 Season 2’s Prelude Comic Will Be Essential Reading
2026 looks like an amazing year for Marvel, across both movies and TV! We can expect new seasons of popular live-action shows like Daredevil: Born Again and Spider-Man: Brand New Day, plus a new Avengers film called Doomsday. However, X-Men ’97 Season 2 is likely to generate the most buzz, bringing back beloved characters from the original animated series. The new season is expected to be inspired by classic X-Men storylines, particularly the popular “Age of Apocalypse” arc from the 1990s, but with a fresh, contemporary take.
The cover art by Nauck effectively establishes the initial situation. It’s strongly based on a well-known cover from the “Days of Future Past” storyline, which showed a future where the X-Men had perished, leading readers to believe the remaining mutants are grieving their loss. However, this story offers a clever reversal: this time, the X-Men are the ones traveling through time.
The most exciting part will be seeing which characters and teams get featured. The original X-Men: The Animated Series included a lot of different groups, even a version of X-Factor, and we can expect many of them to reappear in Season 2. A special issue arriving on June 3rd will provide important background for what’s to come.
