X-Men’s Cosmic Villain Reboot In The MCU: A New Era For Marvel’s Mutants

After the upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars movie, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is expected to essentially restart, launching a fresh set of stories. The focus of this new MCU will likely be on two superhero teams: the X-Men and the Fantastic Four. When introducing the X-Men, it’s crucial that Marvel takes the characters in a new direction, different from how they were portrayed in the previous movies made by Fox.

For years, the X-Men movies at Fox focused on conflicts between mutants, usually portraying the X-Men as the good guys working to defeat Magneto and his followers and protect their image. Stories like the mutant cure, the Dark Phoenix Saga, and the introduction of Apocalypse all followed this pattern. Now that the X-Men are part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s time to try a new approach.

The X-Men Need To Fight These Cosmic Villains In The MCU

As a huge movie fan, I’ve always loved how the X-Men, thanks to Stan Lee’s brilliant vision, acted as a powerful metaphor for real-world struggles with prejudice. The core idea – humans fearing and hating mutants simply because they were different – was a really clever way to explore issues like racial tension and, even now, the fight for LGBTQ+ rights. It wasn’t just a superhero story; it held a mirror up to society.

If Marvel doesn’t want to tackle complex social issues with its X-Men films, there’s a simpler, more entertaining route they could take. Beyond fighting for acceptance or battling other mutants, the X-Men have a rich history with science fiction and space adventures.

The story began with the X-Men’s battle to save Jean Grey against the Shi’ar, a fight they ultimately lost in the famous Dark Phoenix Saga. This event paved the way for the X-Men to venture into space and confront extraterrestrial dangers, some of which eventually came to Earth and threatened the whole world – a conflict known as the Brood storyline.

The Brood are an alien race resembling large insects. While they share some visual similarities to the Xenomorphs from the Alien movies, they are quite distinct. This aggressive species devours all resources they encounter, and are physically imposing with both internal and external skeletons, as well as sharp, fanged mouths. They are truly frightening creatures.

These creatures are dangerous because they can both sting victims with venom, killing or paralyzing them, and lay eggs inside any living being. When these eggs hatch, they not only kill the host, but also take over their mind and body, much like the creature in the movie The Thing.

As a huge movie fan, I think this storyline is smart because it feels familiar enough to what we’ve seen before, which means they can easily bring the Brood into the X-Men films without a ton of backstory. Plus, it sets up a cool alien invasion plot – something that could really help this new franchise feel fresh and different from other Marvel movies.

The MCU Needs To Completely Change The X-Men To Succeed

The X-Men films really need to stand apart from previous installments. The first two movies are considered some of the best Marvel films released before the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Unfortunately, the quality became inconsistent after that. The last film of the original trilogy was poorly received, and the first solo Wolverine movie wasn’t successful.

The X-Men film series had a promising restart with X-Men: First Class receiving positive reviews and X-Men: Days of Future Past being considered a standout film. However, X-Men: Apocalypse wasn’t well-received, and X-Men: Dark Phoenix is often ranked among the worst in the franchise. These disappointments nearly overshadowed the earlier successes.

I’ll always have a soft spot for the original X-Men films – so many of us older fans remember how exciting they were! But if Marvel’s bringing the X-Men into the MCU, they really need to deliver something fresh. It needs to feel like those first two movies – that same energy and heart – while still being something new and different. It’s a tall order, but that’s what we’re hoping for.

As a huge film fan, I really think X-Men: First Class showed us how to successfully introduce a new team of heroes. Now, the Marvel Cinematic Universe needs to build on that success with its own mutant heroes. If they do it right, they can recapture that same magic and energy the MCU was once famous for, especially as the Avengers’ story feels like it’s winding down.

The X-Men Are The MCU’s Only Chance At Rebounding After Secret Wars

The most important thing to remember is that this could be the MCU’s last opportunity to win back audiences. That might be more difficult than it seems. While there have been some good Marvel projects recently, fans often don’t appreciate them until much later, after they’ve already formed an opinion.

Look, I’m bracing myself. Even when the X-Men finally join the MCU, I fully expect a certain segment of fans – especially those online personalities who seem to thrive on negativity – to find something to complain about. That’s just the nature of the beast these days. But honestly, the X-Men films have to be incredible. They need to be so good, so undeniably fantastic, that even the most vocal critics can’t hold them back from being a massive success. It’s a high bar, but that’s what’s needed to truly win everyone over.

With Avengers: Secret Wars, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is planning a fresh start, which is essential for its success. Bringing the X-Men into the mix could be key to attracting audiences back to the cinema. However, Marvel needs to strike a balance – honoring its history while also delivering something new and exciting. This could be their final opportunity to regain its leading position.
