Xbox Ally gets game compatibility indicators — and OG Ally owners get a nice Armoury Crate update too

Okay, so I know a lot of us haven’t jumped on the latest tech yet, and that’s totally fine! I’m really happy to see ASUS hasn’t forgotten about the original ROG Ally and the Xbox Ally X. They’re rolling out an update today, which is awesome news for those of us still rocking those devices – it’s great they’re continuing to support them!

The Xbox app now shows which games work well on handheld devices, and this isn’t just for the Xbox handheld – both the Xbox handheld and other portable gaming devices can use this feature to easily see which games are best for on-the-go play.

Let’s discuss the meaning of the new compatibility indicators and what the recent Armoury Crate update offers for original ROG Ally owners.

Handheld compatibility indicators hit the Xbox app and Xbox Ally

With the release of handheld gaming devices like the Xbox Ally, Xbox has updated its PC app to show which games are best suited for them. When you look at a game in the app, you’ll now see a tag indicating it’s been optimized for handheld play. Currently, this feature seems to be mostly available for games made by Xbox themselves – for example, I see the tag for both Minecraft and Call of Duty on my ROG Ally.

This is a great start, and we hope to see support for more games added in the future, much like how the Steam Deck handles compatibility. However, the Xbox app still needs some work. On my ROG Ally, I’ve found the filters could be better, the menus aren’t always easy to navigate, and performance isn’t consistently smooth. Your experience on an Xbox handheld may vary.

It’s fantastic that this feature is also available on the original Ally devices. I thought they might be overlooked with the new Xbox handhelds appearing, but that’s not what happened! Plus, it’s not just the Xbox app providing updates – ASUS is releasing a new Armoury Crate SE update today with several useful improvements.

A solid week for Ally owners all around

I’ve tested the latest Armoury Crate SE update, and it’s significantly improved my ROG Ally. The redesigned Command Center is much smoother and more polished, and integrating Xbox Game Bar directly into it makes the whole experience feel more connected to the Xbox ecosystem.

I’m looking forward to the next update that will allow the Ally to launch directly into the Xbox app, but this current improvement is a great move forward.
