Sad Cat and the publisher of the game, Thunderful Games, have made an announcement that aims to ensure the project’s success, which in turn may alter the availability and release date of the game titled “Replaced”.
The pixel-art sci-fi platformer known as “Replaced” was initially planned for release on Xbox Series X/S, Epic Games, and Steam, but it’s been pushed back multiple times since its original release date three years ago. Sadly, another delay has occurred, moving the game’s launch from this year to Q1 2026. The development team behind “Replaced” has shared their apologies for this latest postponement.
Director Yura Zhdanovic of Replaced acknowledged our community’s anticipation for the game, admitting that it has taken longer than expected to release. He apologized for this delay but emphasized that their goal was to ensure the project’s quality and deliver a unique experience to players. Excitingly, they are nearly finished with production, and Replaced is scheduled to arrive on PC and Xbox Series X|S in spring 2026.
It’s not a new occurrence that the game has encountered development issues similar to what happened around this same period last year. Last year, the official Replaced X account shared an update from Sad Cat Studios, explaining that the game would be postponed until 2025. The announcement expressed remorse for the initially optimistic release date and acknowledged the game’s unique development challenges. They are proud of creating something so special and need more time to meet their high standards and those of their fans.
With the latest update on the delay, it seems that the difficulties developers had mentioned earlier regarding the game’s development remain substantial. The postponement of the release and the absence of any reference to the Xbox One suggest that the game may no longer be planned for the last-gen console. Although the official website for Replaced still states that an Xbox One version is “coming soon,” it’s plausible that the site hasn’t been updated, or perhaps the developers forgot to mention the Xbox One version in their announcement, or they could be planning to reveal more details about the Xbox One version at a later stage. Regardless of the reason, this news may disheartens Xbox One enthusiasts who were eager to play Replaced and haven’t yet transitioned to the Xbox Series X|S.
First unveiled back in 2021, the game titled Replaced was found to be steeped in an 80s retro-pixel aesthetic, similar to the 2.5D cinematic platformer, The Last Night, by Odd Tales. As suggested on its Steam page, Replaced is a 2.5D game and is set in an alternate 1980s America. The game promises to offer a gritty, stylized post-apocalyptic world for exploration, and is marketed as a cinematic single-player experience.
