Xbox Game Ending Support Only 2 Years After Release

Today’s video game industry is competitive and fast-paced. Consistent updates and well-maintained online servers are often essential for a game to thrive. Big publishers have high expectations, and games that don’t perform well can be quickly abandoned. Because studios often face significant cuts after a single unsuccessful game, it’s common to see games that aren’t receiving great reviews shift towards more achievable goals.

This also applies to Forza Motorsport, the newest racing game in the popular Xbox series. While it launched in 2023 to positive reviews, players had a more mixed reaction. Plans for several years of updates and improvements to the game have now been cancelled, suggesting that fans may not be getting another Forza Motorsport game for some time.

Forza Motorsport (2023) Isn’t Getting Any More New Updates

The Forza Motorsport series has been a reliable presence in the racing game world, releasing 14 major titles between 2005 and 2023. The latest installment, Forza Motorsport (released in 2023 by Turn 10 Studios and Xbox Game Studios), received positive reviews and even won two awards at the 2023 Game Awards. However, players weren’t as impressed with the game. A key selling point for this new version was the promise of ongoing updates and new content to address player concerns. Unfortunately, it appears Xbox has now stopped development on any further additions to the game.

Turn 10 Studios has announced that they’re ending active development of the game. Although the online servers will stay running so players can continue to race, there won’t be any new cars, tracks, or regular updates to fix problems. The team promises to still host special events and competitions, and previously planned content will still be released. This will keep the game enjoyable for current players. The developers are now shifting their focus to creating Forza Horizon 6, which is expected to launch around 2026.

Why Forza Motorsport’s Future Has Come To A Halt

When Forza Motorsport first launched, Turn 10 Studios had planned to support it with updates and improvements for several years, including adding new cars and tracks. However, the studio was significantly affected by layoffs earlier this year, with around 120 team members—roughly half the staff—being let go. As a result, the remaining Turn 10 team is now working with Playground Games on Forza Horizon 6.

Okay, so it’s good news that Forza Motorsport isn’t going anywhere right now, but honestly, I’m a little worried about what this means for the series long-term. Forza Motorsport has always been a huge deal for Xbox, kind of like their version of PlayStation’s Gran Turismo. But it sounds like Microsoft isn’t prioritizing it at the moment. Phil Spencer basically said they need to focus on games that are coming out sooner, which… yeah, that doesn’t exactly fill me with confidence about future Forza Motorsport titles.

Considering how well-known the Forza series is, the news about Forza Motorsport stopping development feels like another setback for Xbox as it competes with PlayStation and the upcoming Switch 2. This is especially true after games like Halo: Combat Evolved and Gears of War were released on PlayStation. It’s worrying that even established Xbox franchises aren’t secure, facing potential cancellations or reduced development. Luckily, racing fans still have Forza Horizon 6 to anticipate, which is scheduled to launch on Xbox sometime next year and will offer the series’ signature open-world racing experience.
