If you’re an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate member, you can now play what many consider to be one of the greatest first-person shooter games ever created. This applies to players on Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PC, and even through the Cloud. The game first came out in 2012, so you might have already experienced it. But if not, and you’re a Game Pass subscriber, now’s the perfect chance to check it out!
The Xbox Game Pass game we’re talking about is a title from Ubisoft and is frequently mentioned as one of the best games ever made – not just within its specific type, but overall. It also features one of the most memorable video game villains of all time. That’s right, Far Cry 3 is now available on Xbox Game Pass, but only if you have the Ultimate subscription. Players with the Premium or Essential tiers, unfortunately, won’t be able to play this Ubisoft classic.
One of the Best Ubisoft Games
If you asked me the best Ubisoft game ever, my mind immediately goes to Assassin’s Creed 2, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, or even Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood. Those games really represent the best of the Assassin’s Creed series. I definitely think Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time and Rayman Legends deserve a mention too. But honestly, for me, Far Cry 3 is where it’s at. It was the peak of Ubisoft’s open-world design, and I think it was a time when they were really on top of their game. It’s just a classic.
Receiving a score of 91 on Metacritic and selling over 10 million copies, Far Cry has spent the last 13 years attempting to recapture the magic of Far Cry 3, but hasn’t quite succeeded. It’s not that the subsequent games have been bad – some have been enjoyable – but none have reached the same level as Far Cry 3, which remains the defining title in the series. This is especially likely to hold true if the recent buzz about Far Cry 7 drastically altering the series’ established formula proves accurate.
Playing Far Cry 3 in 2025
If you’re concerned Far Cry 3 hasn’t aged well, rest assured it still holds up today. Essentially, every Far Cry game released since then has been a refined version of Far Cry 3, with improved graphics. While the game’s visuals are a little dated – it originally came out during the Xbox 360 era – it’s still perfectly enjoyable. Importantly, each Far Cry game offers a unique, self-contained experience. There are occasional references to previous titles, but these are mostly limited to recurring characters and easter eggs.
If you choose to play Far Cry 3 with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, you can expect to spend around 15 to 25 hours with this open-world, first-person shooter, depending on how many optional activities you do. Players who aim to complete everything will likely need between 35 and 40 hours with the Ubisoft game.
If you don’t currently have the Ultimate subscription, and were considering upgrading, the price has recently increased. That means it will now cost $30 per month.
