With Phil Spencer’s unexpected retirement and Asha Sharma taking over as CEO of Microsoft Gaming, Matt Booty, the Chief Content Officer, shared his reaction. He expressed enthusiasm about working with Sharma and optimism for the future, explaining that his priority will be to support existing teams and help them succeed.
Big shifts in a company often lead to job cuts, as we’ve recently seen at Ubisoft. But Matt Booty has stated that there aren’t currently any restructuring plans for their studios. Still, things are subject to change in the future.
Last summer was a period of significant change for Xbox Game Studios. They cancelled three big games – Perfect Dark, Everwild, and a new game called Blackbird. As part of this restructuring, they shut down The Initiative studio and had layoffs at many other studios. Turn 10 Studios, the team behind Forza, had its focus shifted to supporting other projects, finishing up Forza Motorsport, and is now working on bringing Forza Horizon 6 to PlayStation 5.
The game lineup for 2026 is shaping up to be impressive. We can look forward to titles like Forza Horizon 6 (coming in May) and Fable (in the fall). Gears of War: E-Day is also expected around the second half of the year, and Halo: Campaign Evolved might launch before September. While Grounded 2 has been successful so far, Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2 didn’t sell as well as hoped.
There’s plenty more news on the way, and that doesn’t even include the next Xbox, which is currently expected in 2027 – if memory chip shortages don’t cause delays. Keep checking back for updates, and look out for the latest rumors about Microsoft’s plans for future consoles.
