Fans of Pokémon-like games on PC are in luck! Monster Hunter Stories and its sequel, Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruins – two of my favorites – are now available on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S as part of the Monster Hunter Stories Collection.
You can also play these games on your Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X using remote play, letting you enjoy these fantastic Xbox JRPGs even when your main Xbox is already in use.
If you’re new to these games, let me quickly explain what makes them so great – they’re fantastic for fans of Japanese role-playing games and offer a fresh, improved take on the classic Pokémon experience.
Monster Hunter Stories is a different take on the Monster Hunter games. While the main series focuses on hunting monsters in large areas with action-packed combat, Stories lets you fight monsters in turn-based battles and, instead of defeating them, you aim to become friends and have them join your team as allies.
In each game, you take on the role of a Rider – skilled warriors with the unique ability to befriend and tame monsters. They do this using special items called Kinship Stones.
Explore a vibrant world with your Monstie partners and the friends you make along the way! Together, you’ll solve mysteries, discover new Monsties, and protect the land from terrible disasters.

These games are special and enjoyable because they blend the monster-collecting style of Pokémon with the world, creatures, and action of Monster Hunter.
Unlike many games where your creatures just watch, these games allow your character to fight *with* their trained beasts, making them active participants in combat.
As a researcher studying this game, I’ve found players can utilize classic Monster Hunter weapons – think Greatswords, Hammers, and Hunting Horns – and even set traps for enemies. What’s really interesting is the ability to direct their Monsties – the monsters they’ve befriended – to unleash devastating attacks against other hostile creatures.
Monster Hunter Stories lets you really personalize your character and your Monsties. You can outfit your Rider with different equipment to make them stronger, and pass on genes from one Monstie to another to unlock new skills and create a powerful team.
I can’t wait to return the world of Monster Hunter Stories on Xbox

As both a Monster Hunter and JRPG fan, I absolutely adore these games.
Although the stories themselves aren’t very complex, the games feature likable characters and vibrant, engaging worlds.
What I love most about these games is the engaging combat – it’s tricky but really enjoyable, like a classic rock-paper-scissors game. I also spend ages collecting every creature and combining their traits to build a powerful, unique team.
Xbox players can now enjoy the Monster Hunter Stories Collection, which is available to buy at multiple stores.
Plus, this game is a perfect way for newcomers to learn the story before *Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection* comes out. That next installment looks to be the largest in the series so far, featuring a more mature storyline, a bigger world to explore, and tons of new monsters to collect from *Monster Hunter Rise* and *Monster Hunter Wilds*.
