Selena Quintanilla-Pérez’s widoweris looking back at his life with the Queen of Tejano music.
Thirty years after the heartbreaking death of singer Selena at just 23 years old, her husband, Chris Pérez—who she married in 1992—has shared a rare look at how she became a star.
In an exclusive preview of the upcoming Netflix documentary Selena y Los Dinos, he explained that Selena was constantly busy and on the move. He noted that touring began to feel very fast-paced and chaotic.
Instead of reducing her responsibilities, Selena decided to explore fashion and costume design as a new way to express her creativity.
Chris, 56, remembered that his wife truly enjoyed the design process. He said she’d make dedicated, peaceful time for herself, getting out her sketchbooks and enthusiastically starting to work.
Selena’s passion for drawing eventually became a key part of her stage shows. As her band’s lead guitarist, Chris, noted, she actually designed some of their costumes.
Since Selena was tragically killed by Yolanda Saldívar, the president of her fan club, on March 31, 1995, Chris has collaborated with the Quintanilla family to honor her legacy, even though they’ve sometimes disagreed on how to do so.

In December 2016, Chris was sued by his father-in-law, Abraham Quintanilla Jr., who wanted to halt a TV series based on the musician’s 2012 memoir, To Selena, With Love. The project was ultimately cancelled, and Chris and Abraham reached a friendly agreement about the issue almost five years later.
As a longtime fan, it meant so much to me when Chris shared on X back in September 2021 that, with the recent difficulties resolved, he and the Quintanilla family just want us all to come together and keep Selena’s incredible legacy alive. It’s what she deserves, and it’s a beautiful goal to work towards.
The new series Selena y Los Dinos arrives on Netflix November 17th. In the meantime, enjoy a photo gallery celebrating the singer’s incredible life.
