Okay, so Xbox basically just said one of their big marketing pushes didn’t really pan out. Late last year, they did that “This Is an Xbox” campaign, showing their games on phones, laptops, and handhelds. The idea was to show you could play Xbox games anywhere, but a lot of us felt like it made buying an actual Xbox Series X or S seem less important. And honestly, sales have been down since then. Now it looks like Xbox agrees that maybe highlighting play-anywhere wasn’t the best strategy after all.
This week, Xbox quietly removed all mentions of its “This Is an Xbox” campaign from its website. The company even deleted the original announcement of the slogan, suggesting they’ve decided to move away from it. It’s surprising, considering how heavily Xbox promoted the phrase just over a year ago – they even sold branded merchandise featuring it – that they’re now acting as if the campaign never happened.
The Timing of This Move Makes Sense
Xbox’s decision makes sense considering they recently announced their next console, currently called Project Helix, which will be able to play games on both Xbox and PC. This new console demonstrates Xbox’s continued commitment to creating its own gaming hardware. Therefore, suggesting players use platforms other than Xbox consoles could potentially hurt sales of Project Helix before it’s even released.
Microsoft will likely continue to focus on letting people play Xbox games on different devices, but they probably won’t emphasize this so much that it discourages console purchases. Now that the current promotional push is over, Xbox is hoping to see more success with the upcoming launch of Helix.
