The Xbox Series X has recently seen success with two summer releases. While one of these games is also popular on the PS5, the other is exclusive to Xbox Series X and has not been accessible for PS5 users. On the contrary, this Xbox-exclusive game, an increasingly scarce occurrence, was the third most downloaded game in August 2025, following closely behind Peak and Delta Force, as suggested by a recent report.
The latest report, originating from Alinea Analytics, suggests that Grounded 2 was downloaded third most frequently among Steam and console games in August 2025. Given that it’s not available on PS5 or Nintendo Switch, this achievement is notable, assuming the data is correct. It’s worth mentioning that Grounded 2 is accessible through Xbox Game Pass, enabling many users to download it at no cost. Interestingly, the report estimates that approximately 80% of Grounded 2 players are on Xbox, despite Steam having a larger user base. While Xbox Game Pass is present on PC, it boasts a significantly larger user base on Xbox consoles.
Not a Surprise
If the recent report holds true, it’s not too unexpected that Grounded might not be frequently mentioned among Obsidian Entertainment’s top games. When fans discuss their favorite titles from this developer, they often point towards Fallout: New Vegas, South Park: The Stick of Truth, or The Outer Worlds. However, despite being the studio’s most-played game to date, Grounded (released in 2022) is rarely brought up in such conversations. It’s worth noting that over 20 million users downloaded the original Grounded. As for Grounded 2, while we can’t predict if it will achieve the same level of success, it started strong with around 3 million players just a couple of weeks following its July release. This puts it on a good footing, but to reach the 20 million mark like the original game, it needs to maintain its player base for an extended period.
Following a somewhat underwhelming beginning to 2025, marked by one of the year’s biggest letdowns, Xbox managed to have an impressive summer. Notably, Xbox was likely second only to Nintendo during this period, with Nintendo clearly dominating due to the release of the Nintendo Switch 2.
