Although NetEase probably won’t officially say so, it looks like Gang of Dragon – the game from Toshihiro Nagoshi (creator of the Yakuza series) and his new studio – has been canceled without a public announcement.
In March, reports surfaced that NetEase planned to end their financial support for Nagoshi Studio, creating an urgent need for the team to find new investors. The project was estimated to require around $44 million (¥7 billion) more to complete, and with NetEase withdrawing funding in May, Nagoshi Studio faced a significant shortfall.
Although there hasn’t been an official announcement, it’s becoming increasingly clear that Nagoshi Studio has closed and the ‘Gang of Dragon’ project has been cancelled.
Adding to the recent disappearance of the developer’s YouTube channel, Toshihiro Nagoshi will be featured in this week’s issue of Famitsu with no mention of his new studio or the Gang of Dragon game. He participated in an interview with several other Japanese creators, and he’s the only one whose profile doesn’t list their company or past work.
Daisuke Sato, formerly the studio director of Nagoshi Studio, has updated his social media profile to indicate he is no longer with the company.
Unfortunately, everything now points to this project never seeing the light of day.
The core idea behind Gang of Dragon – which is essentially a Yakuza-style game – centers around Shin Ji-seong, played by the popular actor Ma Dong-seok. Shin is a powerful figure in a Korean criminal organization operating in Kabukicho. While navigating Shinjuku, he gets caught up in dangerous conflicts and builds meaningful relationships that force him to question his life’s direction.
