With the 20th anniversary of the Yakuza/Like a Dragon series approaching in December 2025, developer RGG Studio announced a highly anticipated remake at the Tokyo Game Show. Players have already seen remakes of the first two games, and now the team is bringing a complete overhaul of *Yakuza Kiwami 3* to both new and longtime fans, promising fresh content and updated visuals.
During the RGG Summit at Tokyo Game Show, the developers officially announced *Yakuza Kiwami 3*. They showcased a new trailer, confirming the game is being completely rebuilt using the Dragon Engine – the same technology that powered *Yakuza 6*. This is great news for fans, as it suggests *Kiwami 3* will offer a fantastic gameplay experience to match its impressive visuals.
The Dragon Engine is known for its fantastic hand-to-hand combat, as demonstrated in games like *Yakuza 6* and *Judgment*. Though we haven’t seen gameplay of Kiryu Kazama in *Kiwami 3* yet, it’s likely to feature the same satisfying, brawl-focused fighting that fans enjoy. Plus, *Yakuza 3* is a game that would really benefit from a modern update like this.
Now that remakes of *Yakuza 1* and *2* are available, *Yakuza 3* is the oldest game in the series. While still enjoyable, it shows its age, even with the remastered version. A complete remake, similar to the Kiwami remakes, would be a welcome treat for dedicated fans and allow newer players to experience a more gentle and emotional side of Kiryu’s story.
In *Yakuza 3*, Kiryu has retired from the yakuza and is now running an orphanage in Okinawa. Players see a softer side of him as he takes on the role of an uncle figure, raising Harauka Sawamura and other children. Considering how much *Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth* explores this part of Kiryu’s life, it’s good that the developers have provided an updated way for players to experience his backstory.
In *Yakuza 3*, players meet Rikiya Shimabukuro, who quickly becomes one of Kiryu’s closest and most reliable friends. Although he doesn’t appear in many games, Rikiya makes a big impression. However, some fans might be disappointed to learn that the character model has been updated to match the new voice actor.
RGG Studio hasn’t revealed much about the new content planned for the game so far, instead choosing to highlight the returning voice actors. However, they did confirm that *Yakuza Kiwami 3* will offer both English and Japanese voiceovers, continuing a feature introduced in *Yakuza: Like a Dragon* and *Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth*. Separately, RGG Studio is also releasing a new side story game called *Dark Tides*, which will feature Yoshitaka Mine, the villain from *Yakuza 3*.
