Taylor Sheridan’s incredibly popular Yellowstone has spawned a connected world of shows, and his newest Western, The Madison, might be the next big hit in that universe.
Starring Michelle Pfeiffer, Kurt Russell, Patrick J. Adams, and Matthew Fox, The Madison explores how a family is impacted by loss and the bonds they share. Despite both being set in Montana, The Madison and Yellowstone are separate stories with no connection to each other.
Michelle Pfeiffer and Kevin Costner recently discussed their new show, The Madison, with The Wrap. They explained the series will delve into themes of tragedy, family, and love. They also suggested it might connect to Costner’s popular Yellowstone franchise, with Pfeiffer stating The Madison exists within the same “universe” and Russell predicting the two shows could eventually intersect.
I’m not making any big predictions, but I think it will be worth watching to see if this develops and potentially reveals connections between things.
Pfeiffer talked about how she got involved in Sheridan’s new Western film and even contacted Helen Mirren, who previously appeared in two seasons of the Yellowstone prequel, 1923, for advice.
I was hoping to get Helen Mirren’s thoughts on the project, even though I don’t know her personally – I was trying to connect through some mutual acquaintances. I really valued her opinion and thought she’d be honest. And she was amazing! She was incredibly kind with her feedback, telling me, ‘The scripts are perfect, the production is perfect. I’m having the time of my life.’ It meant the world to me to hear her say that.
The actors hinted that season two is in the works and a significant portion of it has already been filmed. While a second season of The Madison has been officially confirmed, initial ratings are lower than other shows created by Taylor Sheridan. After its debut, season one received a 67% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which is a bit of a letdown considering the show’s potential to connect with the Yellowstone universe.
As of now, Sheridan hasn’t confirmed whether Russell’s hints are accurate, and he’s stated before that The Madison was intended as a separate show. Still, a crossover with Yellowstone isn’t impossible, and it appears both Pfeiffer and Russell are interested in being part of that universe.
The Madison is available to stream on Paramount+.
