As a big fan of Yellowstone, I’m really intrigued by what’s happening with Kayce Dutton now that the main series has finished. It feels like a lot is shifting for both the character and, honestly, for Luke Grimes as the actor portraying him – there’s a real transition happening, and it’s something audiences are definitely noticing.
Fans were surprised to discover that Monica Dutton, Kayce’s wife, won’t be appearing in the new spin-off, Marshals. Actress Kelsey Asbille, who has played alongside Kevin Costner since the beginning of Yellowstone, was written out of the show when her character died off-screen.
Grimes was very upset when he learned his longtime colleague wouldn’t be joining him for this new phase of their character’s story, and he shared his initial reaction in a recent interview with TopMob.
My initial reaction was strong dislike for the idea – it just didn’t make sense to me. Kayce and Monica were inseparable; their love story was central to the whole narrative, like two parts of one whole. I honestly couldn’t understand how it could work at first.
Kelsey and I are really close friends. She supported me throughout my entire time on Yellowstone, and I honestly don’t know how I would have gotten through it without her by my side on set.
At first, it seemed like scheduling conflicts prevented Asbille from appearing in the show. However, Grimes has since explained that, from a story perspective, it actually worked well for Monica to not be involved with the Marshals.
I gradually came to understand they already had everything they desired. If they were going to stay together, raise Tate, keep the ranch, and live that perfect life, then there wasn’t any more story for me to write, Grimes explained. Therefore, we should let them be happy. Ultimately, there were only a few ways to prevent that dream from happening, and that’s what drove the next chapter.
Fortunately, Asbille supported the decision to continue the show even after her departure, and Grimes feels that while it was difficult filming without her, Monica’s death adds complexity to Kayce’s character and opens up an interesting storyline for him as a Marshal.
I suddenly understood what the entire series was about. It really comes down to this: how does someone rebuild their life and find new meaning after losing the person they loved most? That’s the heart of the show,” Grimes explained.
Since Monica left, Kayce has found purpose helping others and fighting crime, all while taking full responsibility for raising his son, Tate. Her absence has clearly added depth to his character, and it will be compelling to watch how he continues to evolve throughout the rest of this season and into the next season of Marshals.
