After 16 years, the beloved shojo manga Yona of the Dawn has finished its run in Hana to Yume magazine. The series, which began in 2009, was celebrated for its beautiful artwork, original story, and endearing characters. It gained even more fans after the 2014 anime adaptation by Studio Pierrot. And now, over a decade later, the magazine has announced a sequel anime to coincide with the manga’s ending. Though the conclusion is emotional for many, the new anime offers something exciting to anticipate.
Fans around the world have been eagerly waiting for a continuation of the series, so the recent announcement has created a lot of excitement online. While specific details about the sequel are still upcoming, we should hear more next year. In addition to the new anime season, the manga will soon release its final two volumes, plus a bonus story. The manga’s author, Kusanagi Mizuho, has been sharing news about the series on her official X account. She feels good about how the manga concluded, but does have one minor regret about the ending.
Yona of the Dawn Creator Reveals Her Regret Over the Manga Ending
Mizuho explained she’s creating a side story because she wasn’t able to include everything she wanted in the main series. She plans to publish it in the February 20th issue of Hana to Yume next year.
She also gave an update on the next manga volumes. Volume 47, available February 20th, will contain chapters up to 274. Volume 48 will include chapters 275, the final episode, and a bonus side story. She wished she could have included everything in volume 47, but there wasn’t enough space.
She also cautioned fans against sharing spoilers after seeing panels circulating online. The story wrapped up with a touching ending, marking the completion of Yona’s adventure. Because the manga began its final arc last year, the conclusion felt complete and satisfying, resolving all storylines. However, there’s still potential for the story to continue, likely through a side story that will show what happens with the characters after the finale.
The series will conclude with Volume 47, accompanied by a special 64-page artbook in A5 size. This final volume will be shorter, containing just two chapters and an extra story, with its release date still to be announced. The first season of the anime is available on Crunchyroll, and the first 45 volumes of the manga are available for purchase as physical and digital copies on the Viz Media website. English release dates for volumes after 45 haven’t been announced yet, but we may receive updates next year.
