The anime version of Yukinobu Tatsu’s manga, Dandadan, premiered in fall 2024 and quickly gained popularity. Already popular with manga readers, the series also attracted a new audience. It became a hot topic in the anime community, but some viewers might not stick with it. While the premise sounds exciting, Dandadan doesn’t immediately grab your attention, and it takes time to fully appreciate what the show offers.

The first episode of Dandadan hints at a romance story with some fan-pleasing moments, which might lead new viewers to think it’s just another typical romantic comedy with action. But as the story unfolds, it quickly becomes clear that this anime is something special – one of the best new series around. It’s a perfect example of modern anime, constantly surprising viewers with its unique mix of elements and unpredictable plot twists, keeping them completely engaged.

Dandadan Is the Epitome of Modern Anime

I was totally thrown at first by Dandadan! The trailers made it seem like just another action comedy with a bit of romance and, honestly, a lot of fan service. But wow, it’s so much more than that! It doesn’t stick to one story; it’s constantly mixing things up, which keeps every twist genuinely surprising. I initially thought it would be a silly quest – seriously, the first few episodes hinted at a ridiculous search – and that it wouldn’t have much heart. But episode four? It completely flipped the script and proved I was way off base! It’s become a really compelling and unpredictable ride.

Learning about Turbo Granny’s history shows that Dandadan is surprisingly heartfelt despite its eccentric nature. The series’ emotional core really shines in the seventh episode, proving that Dandadan is a diverse and consistently engaging story. Ultimately, the studio Science SARU deserves praise for skillfully improving upon the original source material – that’s exactly what a great studio should do.

Science SARU’s Anime Adaptation Is the Main Factor in Elevating Dandadan as the True Modern Anime

Even if the story itself doesn’t immediately grab you, the anime adaptation of Dandadan, thanks to the amazing work of studio Science SARU, more than makes up for it. A good anime studio should build on the original material, and that’s exactly what Science SARU does. They do this in many ways, most notably through their use of color. For example, the series uses cool colors to depict the aliens, clearly showing the difference between them and humans. They even use 3D CGI – a technique often criticized in anime – to visually set the aliens apart, and it works incredibly well.

I’m completely blown away by Dandadan! The way they handle the ghosts is so clever – they use these warm colors, which makes them feel strangely familiar, like the yokai we all know and love. And honestly, the animation is just gorgeous. But it’s not just pretty pictures; the music is incredible too! Sometimes it’s super energetic and feels like a nod to pop culture, and other times it just hits you right in the feels and amplifies those key emotional moments. Seriously, for me, Dandadan is hands-down the best new anime we’ve seen in years – nothing else even comes close. I really think it deserved to win Anime of the Year at Crunchyroll, honestly!
