Something funny happened while Sandra Bullock was speeding toward worldwide notoriety.
Back in 1995, the actress jokingly told TopMob News that she was the biggest fan of public transportation in the US, and she was proud of it.
After becoming famous for her role in Speed, where she skillfully managed a dangerous situation involving a bus rigged to explode in Los Angeles, Sandra Bullock played a toll booth operator in While You Were Sleeping.
Lucy’s situation could have easily become unsettling—she pretends to be engaged to Peter Gallagher’s character after saving his life, but then develops feelings for his attractive brother, Bill Pullman’s character—however, the story ultimately has a cheerful resolution.
And not just for the fictional characters.
In a 2020 interview with The Washington Post, Sandra Bullock said it was the most enjoyable film experience of her life. She and the cast would often unwind after work by finding local spots for salsa dancing or dinner. They’d have fun with games like Scattergories or just enjoy being silly together. She even wondered where they all found the energy to do it all!
Ironically, she noted, “I don’t think I ever slept. Everything about that experience was magical.”
Except one small drawback.
As she cracked to TopMob back in 1995, “Now every time we go out, I’m the designated driver.”
Despite later becoming incredibly successful in romantic comedies, the 61-year-old actress admitted she was just starting out when she first began working. As she told The Washington Post, she was simply grateful for the opportunity.
I still remember when Speed came out – April 21st, 1995! It was a huge hit, making over $182 million around the world. And honestly, while Sandra Bullock is a massive star now, it’s funny to think about all the other actors who auditioned before she got the part. It really launched her career!
All aboard for some secrets about While You Were Sleeping.

The film was originally going to be called Coma Guy. This nickname came about because screenwriters Frederic Lebow and Dan Sullivan were jokingly referred to as the ‘Coma Guys’ in Los Angeles for a couple of years, as Lebow explained to Buzzfeed UK.
Lebow shared that the movie’s storyline came from a joke he made about his dating life. He recalled that when his friend Dan was married, he was struggling to find dates. He jokingly said he was such a ‘loser’ he couldn’t even date someone in a coma, which made Dan laugh. They then started developing that funny idea into the film’s plot.
3. The original version had the woman in a coma with the man pretending to be engaged to her.

Originally, the filmmakers wanted Meg Ryan to star in the movie. They presented the idea to her production company, but her team had concerns. An executive pointed out that Meg wouldn’t likely take a role where she spends most of the film in a coma. More importantly, they found the premise – a man pretending to be engaged to a comatose woman – unsettling and inappropriate. The executive suggested reversing the story, making the woman the one who was lying, which they thought would make it humorous rather than predatory.
According to Lebow, Demi Moore was originally intended to star in the movie, but contract negotiations failed. He also mentioned that Julia Roberts, along with several other prominent actresses, turned down the part.
Although Speed was released just a year earlier, While You Were Sleeping marked Sandra Bullock’s first romantic comedy and helped establish her as a leading actress in Hollywood.
After reading the script for the film while on the set of Speed, Sandra Bullock contacted the studio expressing her strong interest in the role. According to producer Lebow, she felt a deep connection to the story, particularly its themes of loneliness and the value of family, and believed it was exactly the type of project she was looking for.

Bill Pullman became the star of While You Were Sleeping after playing Jack, but he wasn’t the first choice. Two other famous actors were considered for the part before him.
Lebow shared that Patrick Swayze was considered for the role of Bill at one point. They had actually envisioned Dennis Quaid while developing the character. However, Bill was everyone’s top pick, and looking back, no one could have played the part as well as he did.
When creating the character of Peter, who was in a coma and considered very attractive, the writers specifically envisioned Pierce Brosnan for the part.

Peter Gallagher got the part of Peter, and he had a unique method for portraying a coma: he would genuinely fall asleep while filming those scenes.
He explained to Vulture that if he was going to end up in a coma, he was determined to make it happen. He was even worried about staying out late the night before, fearing exhaustion might prevent him from falling asleep at work. He felt he’d come too far to simply go through the motions.
Despite being known as a Christmas movie, While You Were Sleeping wasn’t originally written that way. According to Lebow, the idea to set it during the holidays came from the studio, who believed a holiday setting would make the film more marketable.
The bike-falling scene with the paperboy wasn’t originally planned and unfortunately, the young actor playing the part broke his wrist while filming it.

During the filming of a train accident scene, Sandra Bullock accidentally dropped a prop head onto Gallagher’s head, hitting a spike. Gallagher, known from The O.C., described the moment, saying he tried to stay calm while the head struck the spike. Bullock immediately looked concerned, but thankfully, he only suffered a minor bruise. He was mostly relieved that a real train didn’t hit them during the mishap.
Gallagher says his character went through significant changes during the scriptwriting process. He doesn’t recall the specifics, but felt the original version lacked realism and was overly stylized.
Interestingly, within three years of the film While You Were Sleeping coming out, both Sandra Bullock and Bill Pullman ended up playing Mae Whitman’s parents. Bullock played her mother in the 1998 movie Hope Floats, and Pullman was her father in the 1996 hit Independence Day.

The house used in the movie ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’, located in La Grange, Illinois, was open to the public for visits and was for sale in 2018.
As a performer, you always have to think on your feet! A great example of that happened during one of my shows. I spontaneously asked the audience, ‘Do I like Jell-O?’ and even made up the alphabet section after Peter’s character woke up. I was trying to really sell the idea of amnesia, you know? I figured, if I truly had no memory, how would I even know basic things – like whether or not I enjoyed Jell-O? It was all about making the character believable!
As a huge fan, I always love spotting familiar faces in movies! It was so cool to see John Travolta’s sister, Margaret, as one of the nurses. And get this – Dick Cusack, who’s actually John and Joan Cusack’s dad, played Peter’s doctor! It’s little details like that that really make a film special.

Pullman was relieved to be out of a love triangle, but he told the Los Angeles Times he felt a wave of embarrassment during the first cast read-through. He explained that the character of Jack hadn’t been developed enough in the script, describing him as constantly complaining and miserable.
He admitted the experience was frightening, worrying about how people would react to his strong personality. However, director Turtletaub explained that Bill significantly improved the script, both by building on existing ideas and adding entirely new ones.
Lucy’s neighbor, Joe Jr., who played an Italian character, seemed to have a New York accent, and there’s a good reason why. According to Lebow, the movie was originally set in Brooklyn, but Disney and the director decided to film it in Chicago instead.
I was so thrilled with While You Were Sleeping – it was a genuinely charming movie! What many people don’t know is that it ended up being the only screenplay Daniel Sullivan and Boaz Yakin ever sold, and sadly, they never collaborated on another film after that. It’s a bit bittersweet, knowing that magic only happened once for them, but I still cherish that movie.

23. While You Were Sleeping earned Bullock her first Golden Globe nomination.
Despite a modest $18 million budget, the film became a huge success, earning over $182 million at the box office. It even surpassed Bad Boys to become the top film at the time and remains one of Sandra Bullock’s most profitable movies.
Jeff Lebow shared that the studio once asked about making a sequel, but he and his team felt the story had reached a natural conclusion. According to Lebow, a studio executive even offered to buy them each a car if they could come up with a compelling idea. While they could have created a sequel just for the sake of it, they believed the original film didn’t warrant one, and the idea was eventually abandoned. Other writers might have been able to pursue it, but the studio didn’t move forward.
