Although Henry Cavill didn’t get to reprise his role as Superman in a direct sequel to 2013’s Man of Steel, director Zack Snyder has revealed that a Man of Steel 2 was planned. Snyder, who originally envisioned the DC Universe, confirmed he had developed a concept for the sequel, featuring a battle between Superman and the villain Brainiac.
Zack Snyder on original idea for Brainiac to be in Man of Steel 2
I was so excited to hear on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that Zack Snyder actually had a plan for a Man of Steel sequel! He told Josh Horowitz that Brainiac was going to be the main villain, which would have been incredible for the DCEU. It’s a shame we didn’t get to see that story unfold.
The director of Watchmen confirmed they had plans to create a connected universe. The idea was to build a solid timeline that would allow them to make a standalone Superman/Brainiac movie.
Although Zack Snyder originally intended something different, he directed Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice as the second film in the DC Extended Universe. His plans for a follow-up to Man of Steel never came to fruition, and the DCEU ultimately concluded earlier than expected in December 2023 with the release of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.
Despite the ensemble cast, Zack Snyder maintains that his DC trilogy – Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, and Justice League – is ultimately Superman’s story. The 60-year-old director explained that even with Batman’s significant role, the entire saga revolves around Superman being the ultimate survivor and savior. He believes the universe he created wouldn’t exist without Superman at its core.
Although Zack Snyder’s plans for a Man of Steel sequel didn’t include the super-intelligent android Brainiac, the character will now appear in James Gunn’s upcoming film, “Man of Tomorrow.” Lars Eidinger will play Brainiac in the DC Universe project, which is expected to be released in theaters on July 9, 2027.
