‘Zootopia 2’ Box Office Beats ‘Toy Story 2’ on Opening Weekend

This movie has quickly become a huge success for Disney, earning over $500 million worldwide in just its opening weekend. That’s more than Disney has made with around 600 of its previous films. Notably, it has already surpassed the lifetime earnings of what many consider to be the best Disney sequel – and one of the greatest sequels ever made.

The sequel to the beloved 1995 film, Toy Story 2, released in 1999, was even better than the original. Remarkably, it currently boasts a 100% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes – a rare achievement, even for classic Disney movies, as critics are often hard to please when it comes to animation.

While Zootopia 2 has been very well-received, it hasn’t earned the universally positive reviews that Toy Story 2 did. Still, a 92% approval rating is impressive. What’s even more encouraging is that audiences seem to love it even more, giving it a 96% score – significantly higher than the 87% for Toy Story 2. Combined with an ‘A’ grade from CinemaScore, this suggests the movie is hitting the mark with viewers.

It’s now looking very likely that Zootopia 2 will easily surpass $1 billion in box office earnings during its time in theaters. The original Zootopia from 2016 has already earned $1.018 billion, placing it among Disney’s top 30 highest-grossing films. If Zootopia 2 performs better than this year’s Lilo & Stitch ($1.04B), it could climb even higher, potentially passing several Marvel movies, last year’s Moana 2 ($1.06B), and both Toy Story 3 ($1.068B) and Toy Story 4 ($1.07B).

‘Zootopia 2’ Can Continue to Dominate the Box Office

Following the massive $226 million opening weekend of Wicked: For Good, Zootopia 2 is enjoying a strong run during the extended Thanksgiving holiday in the U.S. It has a clear path at the box office until Avatar: Fire and Ash arrives on December 19th. Although films like Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 and Michelle Pfeiffer’s Oh. What. Fun are also being released, they aren’t expected to appeal to the same broad audience as Disney’s latest blockbuster.

Recent original Disney films like Strange World, Elio, and Wish haven’t performed well at the box office. However, Inside Out 2 was 2024’s biggest hit, and Moana 2 landed in third place worldwide. Almost two-thirds of the year’s top 30 movies were actually sequels. Because of this success, Disney CEO Bob Iger has emphasized the importance of franchises and continuing existing stories, and the strong performance of Zootopia 2 reinforces that strategy.

Disney is planning even more animated sequels! In addition to previously announced films like Toy Story 5, Frozen 3, and Coco 2, Zootopia 3 is reportedly in the works. Disney has a proven track record of creating successful sequels that audiences love.
