Early showings of Zootopia 2 have broken a box office record. The film is a follow-up to the 2016 hit Zootopia, which earned over $1 billion worldwide. Ginnifer Goodwin and Jason Bateman return as Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde, and Ke Huy Quan joins the cast as a new character, Gary De’Snake.
According to Deadline, Zootopia 2 made $10.2 million at the box office during preview showings on Tuesday. This is the second-highest preview gross for a Walt Disney Animation Studios film, following Moana 2 from 2024 ($14.2 million). Importantly, Zootopia 2’s previews earned more than those of three of Disney’s four films that have grossed over $1 billion worldwide (without considering inflation).
Here’s a look at how much each Walt Disney Animation Studios movie that’s earned over $1 billion worldwide made in preview showings. The numbers below are adjusted for inflation, and we’ve excluded the first week of Frozen‘s release, as it only played in a single theater at that time.
| Title | Previews | Adjusted Previews | Worldwide Box Office |
|---|---|---|---|
| Frozen II (2019) | $8.5 million | $10.7 million | $1.452 billion |
| Frozen (2013) | $1.2 million | $1.7 million | $1.269 billion |
| Moana 2 (2024) | $13.8 million | $14.2 million | $1.059 billion |
| Zootopia (2016) | $1.7 million | $2.3 million | $1.018 billion |
Although Zootopia 2 earned more from preview showings than Frozen II, that doesn’t guarantee it will match Frozen II‘s massive $1.452 billion worldwide gross – which is still Walt Disney Animation Studios’ biggest hit. We’ve seen this happen before: Moana 2 had stronger previews than Frozen II, but ultimately earned over $390 million less at the box office.
Early ticket sales for Zootopia 2 are slightly lower than Frozen II‘s were, when accounting for inflation. Despite this, the movie is still expected to be a major success, potentially earning over a billion dollars and surpassing the box office numbers of the first Zootopia film.
While early ticket sales and opening weekend numbers don’t always guarantee a movie will do well overall, the new Disney film is starting strong and looks likely to be a hit.
Critics are already loving the new movie, Zootopia 2, giving it a ‘Certified Fresh’ rating of 93% on Rotten Tomatoes – just a little below the 98% score the first Zootopia received. While audience scores on Rotten Tomatoes and CinemaScore aren’t available yet, positive reactions could quickly make the movie a big hit.
If the new movie earns a billion dollars, Disney will probably approve a third movie, continuing the story hinted at in the end credits of the first film.
