Disney had a mixed year at the box office in 2025. While Lilo & Stitch was a huge success, becoming one of the year’s highest-grossing films with over $1 billion earned worldwide, the new Pixar movie Elio disappointed. Released after Lilo & Stitch and How to Train Your Dragon, Elio didn’t attract much of an audience and had Pixar’s lowest-ever opening weekend, earning only $72.9 million domestically. However, Disney is now seeing a strong comeback with Zootopia 2, which is already proving to be a major hit.
I’m so thrilled with how well Zootopia 2 did over Thanksgiving! Variety reported it brought in around $156 million here in the US, making it the second-biggest Thanksgiving opening ever – only Moana 2 from last year did better with $225 million. But the really amazing part is how it did globally! It made a huge $556 million worldwide, thanks to a record-breaking launch in China. Can you believe it’s already one of the top 10 highest-grossing movies of 2025? It even beat out The Fantastic Four: First Steps which made $521.8 million! It’s incredible to see so many people loving the movie.
Will Zootopia 2 Have Strong Legs at the Box Office?

With a production cost of $150 million, Zootopia 2 is already doing well at the box office, and now the question is just how much money it will ultimately make. While its impressive opening weekend is a great start, its performance in the second weekend will be key to determining if it can reach $1 billion in total earnings. Big opening weekends don’t always mean a film will continue to perform strongly over time. Films like Zootopia 2, especially sequels, often see a lot of initial excitement from eager fans, and that excitement can fade once people have had a chance to see the movie.
It looks like Zootopia 2 will continue to be a big success for weeks to come. People are saying great things about it – it has the highest Rotten Tomatoes score for a Disney animated film in four years, and audiences love that it’s both funny and thought-provoking. This positive buzz will likely keep drawing viewers to theaters. If the reviews hadn’t been so strong, the film might have seen a big drop in ticket sales, but it’s expected to maintain its popularity.
As a huge animation fan, I’m really excited about Zootopia 2, and it looks like it’s going to have a pretty clear run at the box office for a few weeks. Aside from Wicked: For Good, there aren’t any other big family-friendly animated movies coming out anytime soon, which means Zootopia 2 should dominate with its target audience. Honestly, nothing major is scheduled before Avatar: Fire and Ash hits theaters. While films like Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 and Ella McCay will likely find their fans, they’re a bit more specialized than Zootopia 2. I can easily see Zootopia 2 staying at number one until Avatar comes out, just like Moana 2 did last year – it really has that potential!
Disney is likely very pleased with these recent box office results. 2025 was a tough year, with disappointments like Elio, the flop Snow White, and underperforming Marvel films, plus Tron: Ares losing over $100 million. Zootopia 2 was a much-needed success for the studio. With Avatar: Fire and Ash coming up, Disney is poised for a strong finish to the year, and hopefully a profitable 2026. While they wait to see how future films perform, Disney is probably already planning a third Zootopia movie to keep the popular franchise going.
