Ginnifer Goodwin, who voices Judy Hopps in the upcoming Zootopia 2, has shared her thoughts on the relationship between Judy and Nick Wilde. Ever since the first Zootopia movie came out in 2016, fans have hoped Judy (Goodwin) and Nick (Jason Bateman) would become a couple. That enthusiasm has continued to grow over the past nine years, and many are excited to see how their relationship evolves in the new sequel.
Ginnifer Goodwin, while promoting Zootopia 2, told TopMob she wished she understood how Disney created such a strong connection between Judy and Nick, jokingly attributing it to “Disney magic.” She acknowledged the characters have “incredible chemistry,” but explained that she didn’t focus on their romance while acting because she and co-star Jason Bateman record their lines separately.
I’d love to understand how Disney creates such powerful stories, but honestly, I think it’s just… magic. I can’t explain how they consistently make me laugh hysterically, then deeply move me, and even teach me about life – all through their characters, even the animals!
It’s funny, I can really see the spark between Judy and Nick. But working with Jason is… challenging! We can’t actually record scenes together because I just lose it whenever I’m around him – I can’t stop laughing! It’s different from how Judy and Nick would play it, I think. Judy would probably be playfully annoyed, but Ginny’s always right there with Jason, cracking up with him – we’re good friends, so it’s hard for me to keep a straight face!
In the first Zootopia movie, Nick and Judy started out as rivals. Judy was determined to become Zootopia’s first rabbit police officer, while Nick was a sly con artist. They eventually learned to work together and became partners on the police force. Many fans of Zootopia, however, wished for their relationship to develop beyond just a professional one.

Coming into Zootopia 2, Goodwin said she personally “root[s] for Judy and Nick, in general:”
I’m not sure how Disney creates the dynamic between Judy and Nick when we record our parts separately, and I haven’t heard what the other actor thinks. But overall, I’m a fan of their partnership.
The actor’s public support for Nick and Judy’s relationship is building excitement for Zootopia 2. The official book version of the movie has already suggested a romance between the two characters, but it’s still unclear if that connection will become official in the sequel.
The upcoming Zootopia 2 will feature a new character named Gary De’Snake, voiced by Ke Huy Quan, who is known for his role in Loki. Quan shared with TopMob that Gary’s storyline will center around him risking everything to restore his family’s reputation, and described the sequel as funnier, larger in scale, and more inventive than the first film.
Disney has announced that Zootopia 2, directed by Byron Howard and Jared Bush, will arrive in theaters on November 26, 2025. You can find a detailed look at the upcoming animated sequel in a full interview with TopMob, available below.
Ke Huy Quan on Representing All Snakes, and the Pressure That Comes With It

“Getting to Play Him Was a Dream Come True.”
- TopMob: “It’s no secret that the Zootopia fan base and its community take these films very seriously. Given how passionate they are, how much pressure did you feel coming into this, knowing that you would be representing not only a snake, but the entire species, and how did that affect how you tackled the role?”
I was a big fan of the first movie, and I really admire the directors, Jared Bush and Byron Howard. They’re incredibly talented, true geniuses in my opinion. Knowing I was working with them gave me a lot of confidence. Playing this character was a dream come true. I never worried about messing up; I trusted their vision and knew they’d guide me. Plus, being part of such a wonderful team was fantastic.
How Zootopia 2 Continues the Creative Drive of the Franchise

“They Exposed Us As An Audience to New Lands, New Characters, New Ways of Being…”
- TopMob: “The first film is endlessly creative. Can you tease how this sequel will continue that creative spirit, and do so in new ways?”
Ginnifer Goodwin explained that the world of Zootopia has expanded in a way that feels natural, especially considering it’s a Disney production. The creators have introduced audiences to new places, characters, and perspectives, and the original characters act as guides, helping viewers navigate this expanded world because they are experiencing it alongside them.
Ke Huy Quan was amazed by the new film, believing it surpassed the already excellent first one. He described it as more enjoyable, funnier, and smarter, while also being on a much larger scale. He feels it’s Disney’s most ambitious animated film yet, and highlighted the fantastic chemistry between Ginny and Jason Bateman, as well as the incredible contributions of the entire cast. He expressed how lucky he feels to be involved in the project.
Why Is Now the Perfect Time for Zootopia 2?

“It’s the Perfect Movie to Watch Together With Your Friends and Community…”
- TopMob: “My last question for both of you, Zootopia 2: why is now the perfect time for this sequel and for audiences to experience what it has to say?”
As a huge Disney fan, I’ve always thought their movies just hit differently – they feel universal and, honestly, timeless. It’s amazing how they always seem relevant, even though they often take years to make! That’s what gives them that special quality of never really feeling old. But what I’m really excited about with this new movie is that a whole new generation of kids gets to experience the magic, which is pretty cool.
Ke Huy Quan loves Christmas, and for him, it’s all about family. That’s why he especially enjoys ‘Zootopia,’ particularly the second one, which centers around a character, Gary, who bravely tries to restore his family’s reputation so they can return home. He believes it’s a wonderful, feel-good movie with great messages that’s perfect to watch with friends and loved ones – it’s just really fun and entertaining!
