Zootopia 2 vs. Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 Box Office Showdown Has Surprising Winner

Following a very slow October, movie theaters saw a welcome increase in ticket sales in November. New releases like Wicked: For Good and Zootopia 2 both had strong opening weekends. This success led many to believe the rest of the year would follow a similar pattern to last year, when Wicked and Moana 2 were the biggest hits for several weeks before Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Mufasa: The Lion King took over during the holidays. However, unlike the typically slow period after Thanksgiving, this year saw a surge in attendance with the release of Five Nights at Freddy’s 2.

According to Variety, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 unexpectedly topped the box office this weekend, earning $63 million in the US. This is a strong result, exceeding initial predictions of $35-40 million. Although it’s a bit lower than the $80 million opening weekend of the first Five Nights at Freddy’s movie, it’s still a big success for Blumhouse Productions. With a production budget of only $36 million, the film, based on the popular video game, is projected to be profitable.

Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 performed better than Zootopia 2, which earned $43 million in the United States during its second weekend. Despite this, Zootopia 2 has already made $915.8 million globally and is expected to surpass $1 billion soon.

Will Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 Have Strong Legs at the Box Office?

Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 is continuing a trend at the box office: horror movies performing better than predicted. Like recent hits such as Sinners and Weapons, it had a strong opening weekend, which could lead to several weeks of good business. However, other horror films like Final Destination: Bloodlines and The Conjuring: Last Rites saw a big drop in ticket sales after their initial success. Now, the question is whether Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 will maintain its momentum or follow that pattern of a quick decline.

The new movie, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, will likely perform similarly to the first one. The original film, released during the 2023 actors’ strike, benefited from a lack of competing movies when it first came out. However, its audience dropped significantly—by 76.2%—the following weekend. While it still stayed at number one, this shows the series tends to attract most of its viewers early on, which isn’t unusual for horror films. Considering this pattern, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 could also see a large drop in viewers during its second weekend, even though there aren’t any major new releases coming out next week.

Whether Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 stays at the top of the box office depends on how much its earnings drop. If it falls by around 76% like the first movie did, it could make about $15.2 million this weekend. This would give Zootopia 2 a chance to become the No. 1 movie again. Zootopia 2 has been getting great reviews and is expected to remain popular until Avatar: Fire and Ash comes out on December 19th. While Zootopia 2 also saw a drop in viewers, it’s still the top choice for many, especially those who enjoyed the first film.

Even if Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 doesn’t stay at number one, Blumhouse has a lot to be happy about. The horror studio had a difficult year with unsuccessful releases like Wolf Man and M3GAN 2.0. It’s good to see them recovering, especially since Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 is their second recent success, following Black Phone 2 in October. Given how well this movie is doing, it’s likely Blumhouse will consider making more films in the Five Nights at Freddy’s series.
