The release of 007 First Light is almost here! To help you get the most out of playing as James Bond, we’re sharing some tips and tricks. Just like Bond learns to be a top MI6 agent, understanding these techniques will help you succeed in every mission.
We’ve already spent a good amount of time playing, so we can help you get started and navigate the early parts of the game and beyond. Let’s get right to it!
1. It’s 007, Not 047
It’s tempting to compare IO Interactive’s new game to the Hitman series, but that would be misleading. Unlike Hitman, where Agent 47 focused on complete stealth, this game lets you play as Bond with more options. Getting spotted won’t instantly trigger a massive alarm, as levels are divided into smaller areas. This gives you more freedom in how you tackle challenges, and mistakes aren’t as heavily penalized.
It’s incredibly rewarding to silently take out enemies without being detected, but you can always rely on your weapons and hand-to-hand combat if you’re discovered.
2. Know Your Audience
James Bond movies are known for their grand displays, but the way you experience those moments in First Light is different. The game gives you plenty of chances to create exciting situations, but it’s up to you to find them and take advantage. For example, carefully observing your surroundings to decide if a stealthy approach is best, or even trying to talk your way past enemies, can lead to some truly unforgettable experiences.
When facing danger, you can defend yourself with force if necessary.
3. Listen In On Conversations
A skilled agent constantly seeks out useful information, and in First Light, you play as James Bond by doing just that. The game rewards you for gathering clues – listening in on conversations often reveals new strategies and approaches, letting you fully embrace the role of a sophisticated spy. Always take the opportunity to eavesdrop; it’s a key part of the experience.
Learning a little bit of what’s going on around you could save you from a lot of problems down the road.
4. Strike Up Conversations

James Bond is known for his charm, and in the game First Light, you can really use that to your benefit. Unlike previous games, this one encourages you to talk to characters instead of just avoiding them. These conversations are valuable – the information you gather can be a powerful tool throughout the game. You never know what you’ll discover, but talking to people almost always helps you reach your goals.
5. Remain Focused On The Mission
If you’re familiar with James Bond, you know he’s always focused on completing his missions, which has served him well at MI6. You’ll want to adopt that same approach in this game – pay close attention to every detail you find.
Sometimes, missions will require you to recall the names of important people and select the correct one during dialogue. Incorrect answers will create additional challenges down the line, so it’s best to answer correctly the first time.
6. Hide In Plain Sight

James Bond is known for blending in, and First Light lets you do the same in the game. You can use disguises to trick enemies – like wearing a parka to look like a mercenary, or dressing up for a fancy event to get close to your target.
Sometimes it’s smart to lay low until the right moment, and if you do that, you’re going to enjoy this a lot.
7. Use Your Instinct Well
Experienced players learn to rely on their instincts when things get tough, and First Light is designed with that in mind. Your Instinct meter is limited, so use it strategically. It allows you to silently take down enemies by pulling them closer, which then partially refills the meter. You can also use it to calm suspicious characters, and even briefly slow down time when you really need to.
Use your abilities carefully, and you’ll discover you can handle any challenge as a skilled agent.
8. Tell A Few Fibs
In First Light, you’ll often find yourself in situations where what’s true isn’t clear-cut. Your goal is to convince the characters around you that you’re trustworthy, even when you’re not. And how do you do that? By lying! Don’t hesitate to bluff and mislead others to gain access to places you shouldn’t be.
Deception and the ability to blend in are essential to enjoying the game, and mastering these skills is vital for winning.
9. Maintain Steady Nerves
Don’t worry if you’re discovered or your sneaking attempt fails. The game wants to make you feel pressured, but it just means combat has started. You can easily resolve this by fighting with your weapons or using close-range attacks. Once the game’s interface confirms the situation is handled, you can return to stealth and continue playing carefully and quietly.
Remember, unlike Hitman, failing at stealth is only a stepping stone to succeeding in combat.
10. Get Comfortable Fighting Up Close

We expected sneaking and stealth to be effective, but were impressed by how strong the close-combat fighting is. It can be challenging though – learning to block attacks and use takedowns to quickly eliminate enemies is essential. The game gives you lots of different ways to approach combat, and mastering them all will be a huge help throughout the entire game.
In First Light, enemies often attack in groups, so you’ll need to master close-quarters combat to survive. Once you’ve defeated them, just fix up your suit and get back to your mission.
11. Pay Attention To Your Surroundings
As a gamer, I’ve learned to always scan my surroundings during a fight. There’s almost always something nearby I can use to my advantage. Tough enemy hiding by a wall? Perfect – I can use that to quickly take them down. See a hackable device? Absolutely, I’m using it to disable a couple of foes. And if I spot a light source? You bet I’m overloading it to blind my enemies – that’s a total game-changer!
Bond is known to improvise, and there’s no reason for you not to if you find yourself in a pinch.
12. Try To Save Lives Instead Of Ending Them

Just because Bond is known for taking down his enemies doesn’t mean he throws caution to the wind. His license doesn’t give him free rein to act recklessly. Bond has always avoided unnecessary killing, and that remains true, even when he’s younger and more impulsive.
The game is designed around only killing enemies when you absolutely have to, and you need to keep that in mind throughout the entire experience.
13. Know When Your Licence To Kill Activates
Remember our previous advice: you’re only justified in using deadly force if your opponents try to kill you first. It’s best to avoid that level of escalation whenever possible, unless you’re intentionally seeking a violent outcome or are simply at your wit’s end. While the option to use lethal force exists, it usually leads to the worst results.
These moments are a great chance to showcase Bond’s incredible shooting skills. While it’s tempting to use guns right away, we suggest saving them for when you absolutely have to. That way, you can fully enjoy all the other features and gameplay First Light has to offer.
14. Try To End Fights ASAP

If you find yourself in a fight, it’s best to end it quickly. Giving your opponent time to react could lead them to use a gun, and trying to avoid gunfire while also dealing with other attackers is incredibly difficult and dangerous. It’s much safer to resolve the situation before weapons are involved.
It’s best to resolve conflicts without using firearms, as this helps you stay in control. Gunshots can attract unwanted attention and potentially escalate the situation if others nearby come to investigate.
15. Your Gadgets Are As Important As Everything Else
It’s surprising it took us so long to discuss Bond’s gadgets – they’re a key part of what makes him, well, Bond! He always brings cool tools to the job, and while they might seem useful only in certain situations, their potential is really limited only by your imagination.
When you unlock new abilities, it’s worth taking the time to test them out and see how they fit into your gameplay – whether you’re being stealthy, fighting, or going undercover. Experimenting is a fantastic way to discover creative strategies to gain an edge in First Light, and we think it’s a great way to feel like a Bond who’s still developing his skills.
16. See Things Through A Different (Q)-Lens

If you’re looking for helpful gadgets, we highly recommend the Q-lens. It’s like having super vision – similar to what James Bond uses – allowing you to spot enemies through walls and identify devices you can hack while you’re on missions.
So, remember how I always talk about scoping out a room when I first enter? Well, the Q-Lens is going to make that way easier. Seriously, it’ll help me spot useful stuff so much faster than just looking around with my own eyes – that feels so old school now! I mean, I’m Bond, I need to be using the best tech out there to get the job done.
17. Multipurpose Gadgets
There are many hidden tools in the game, but we don’t want to ruin the surprise by revealing them all. We’ll focus on one that fires a laser with multiple uses. When trying to be sneaky, you can cut ropes holding things up, creating a diversion. In a fight, the laser can briefly stun enemies, making them vulnerable. And if you need to get through a locked door quickly, you can use the laser to disable the lock.
There are a lot of things you can do, and having these helpful tools with you on missions opens up even more options.
18. Use Boss Arenas To Your Advantage

We’ve talked about using your surroundings to your advantage, and that’s particularly important during boss battles. These fights are always tough, so you need to be adaptable and resourceful. Throughout his career, Bond has always overcome skilled opponents through sheer determination, and First Light really lets you demonstrate that same quality.
You’ll encounter some battles where everything we discussed about using your gear will come in handy, so be ready to use your gadgets and the surroundings to your full advantage.
19. Sustain Your Momentum
James Bond is always at the center of thrilling, action-packed scenes where careful planning goes out the window, and impressive stunts are necessary to succeed. These kinds of challenges simply come with the job of being a 007 agent.
When you’re being chased or in an action scene, keep moving! Stopping usually leads to getting caught. React to what’s happening around you instead of pausing to think – that’s a key part of what makes a hero like Bond so effective.
20. Practice Makes Perfect
Dr. Selina Tan’s VR training chamber looks simple, but it’s a fantastic way to sharpen your abilities. You can choose missions and add extra difficulties to practice specific skills. It’s also perfect for experimenting with new equipment and discovering how to use it effectively.
The simulations are also fantastic for mastering both close combat and shooting. If you want to perform well and look good during missions around the world, it’s a good idea to practice in them regularly.
That covers everything you need to know before you start playing 007 First Light and experience the early days of James Bond. It might seem like a lot of information, but the developers have given you plenty of options to create your own unique version of Bond. Now it’s up to you to use those tools and enjoy the adventure – we can’t wait to share more!
Get ready to play! Warm up and prepare yourself, because we’ll be exploring the game’s levels with you as soon as it’s released.
