After development of Borderlands 4 for the Nintendo Switch 2 was put on hold, IO Interactive CEO Hakan Abrak was questioned about the status of 007: First Light on the console. He told The Game Business that 007: First Light won’t face the same issues, and the team is already testing it on the Switch 2.
IO Interactive needs a little more time to finish the Nintendo Switch 2 version of 007: First Light, according to Abrak. The studio wants to avoid releasing a poor-quality port and is still aiming for a Summer 2026 launch, though it might be released later in the summer.
He confirmed the game is being developed for the Switch 2 and explained they need more time to polish it. They want to release a high-quality version and are aiming for a late summer release, though they originally said just ‘summer’. They’re committed to getting the game out, and are working to ensure it meets their standards.
He also noted that James Bond games have a history with Nintendo, likely referencing the popular GoldenEye game on the Nintendo 64. He emphasized that Bond is important to Nintendo and pledged to use his position as CEO to ensure any future Bond games on Nintendo platforms are excellent.
So, I just heard some news about Borderlands 4. Apparently, Take-Two Interactive, the publisher, put a hold on making it for the new Switch 2. Their rep, Alan Lewis, said they had to make a tough call and pause development for that version. But they still plan on bringing more games to Nintendo’s system in the future, which is good to hear!
We’re still dedicated to improving our games after launch by adding new content and making optimizations. We’re working closely with Nintendo, and we’re thrilled to be releasing both PGA Tour 2K25 and WWE 2K26 (on the Switch 2). We plan to bring even more of our games to that platform in the future.
More recent information suggests Gearbox encountered difficulties while trying to develop Borderlands 4 for the Switch 2. According to leaker NateTheHate, work on the Switch 2 version has been on hold for about two months.
Maintaining this has become difficult, and the cost of updating it properly now outweighs how much money it’s likely to generate.
IO Interactive planned to launch the Switch 2 version of 007: First Light at the same time as the game’s release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S on May 27th. However, the Switch 2 version was delayed, and the news was announced last month.
While you’re anticipating the release of 007: First Light, we’re sharing details from a recent preview event. You can also explore a developer diary that delves into the game’s sound and music.
