Xbox Gets Leadership Shake-Up, Stops Development of Copilot on Console

Asha Sharma, CEO of Xbox, has announced the company is scaling back its AI plans. They’ve decided to stop developing Copilot for Xbox consoles and are slowing down work on the mobile version. Sharma explained that they want to focus on features that fit their long-term vision for the platform.

This news is part of a broader leadership change at Xbox. As reported by Kotaku, several new roles have been filled, including Jared Palmer as VP of Engineering, Tim Allen as CVP of Design, Jonathan McKay as Head of Growth, Evan Chaki as General Manager of Transformation, and David Schloss as Head of Subscriptions and Cloud. Notably, three of these new leaders previously worked in Sharma’s CoreAI division.

So, things are shifting around at Xbox. I’m hearing that Jason Ronald, who used to be in charge of all the Xbox hardware and gaming stuff, is now fully focused on Project Helix and the Xbox platform itself. Jason Beaumont is taking on product services and is temporarily running the engineering side of things. Fatima Karadar is leading a new team that’s all about making the player experience better and fixing issues we’ve been having. And Jennifer Creegan is now in charge of Xbox’s media side of things too. Basically, a lot of reshuffling happening behind the scenes!

As part of recent changes, Kevin Gammill is leaving his role as Xbox’s Vice President (CVP) of gaming ecosystem. Additionally, Roanne Sones, CVP of Xbox devices and ecosystems, is taking a temporary leave and will return later as an advisor.

According to Sharma, Xbox needs to accelerate its progress, strengthen its relationship with players, and make things easier for both gamers and developers. She announced that they’ve promoted leaders who were instrumental in building Xbox, while also adding new perspectives to drive future growth. This combination of experience and fresh ideas, she believes, is key to getting Xbox back on the right path.

We’re making some changes, which means we’ll be removing features that no longer fit our long-term plans. Specifically, we’re ending support for Copilot on both mobile and console platforms, and will no longer be developing those versions.

Sharma has often discussed his goal of making Xbox a more inviting platform for game creators. This includes not just Xbox consoles, but also Windows-based devices like PCs and the ROG Xbox Ally, as Microsoft actively seeks to attract developers for all of these systems.

We’re committed to balancing innovation with affordability as we develop new devices, software, and services. While we can’t make any promises about pricing, our goal is to ensure that people globally can enjoy our products. We’re focusing just as much on delivering a great user experience as we are on making things more accessible.

Since becoming CEO of Xbox (formerly Microsoft Gaming), Sharma has lowered the cost of Game Pass subscriptions.
