5 Unique Games Unlike Anything You’ve Played Before

Occasionally, a video game arrives that truly stands out, either with a completely new idea or a fresh take on existing ones. These games aren’t just fun – they inspire others in the industry. Some games achieve this by introducing innovative mechanics, while others tell stories or create worlds in surprisingly original ways. We’ve sifted through many titles and selected five games that offer genuinely unique experiences, setting them apart from everything else. Here they are, presented in a random order.

1) Outer Wilds

Released in 2019 for PC and most consoles, Outer Wilds is an action-adventure game with a unique premise. Players explore a solar system, but are trapped in a 22-minute time loop that ends with the sun exploding. To advance, you must repeatedly investigate the planets and ancient alien structures, piecing together the system’s history to understand the cause of the loop. While many games use trial and error, Outer Wilds stands out by incorporating a fixed time limit for each attempt, making it a truly exceptional experience.

2) Papers, Please

Released in 2013, Papers, Please is a unique puzzle game where you play as an immigration inspector at the border of the fictional country Arstotzka. You’re responsible for checking travelers’ documents and deciding who can enter based on constantly changing rules. You’ll approve some, deny others, and even detain those with fake papers. Essentially, the game puts you in a position of power over people trying to escape a Communist country – a surprisingly compelling and unusual concept for a video game. Despite its serious subject matter, Papers, Please is remarkably well-crafted, balanced, and stands out as a powerful example of a game that encourages empathy.

3) Spiritfarer

Released in 2020, Spiritfarer is a unique game that blends management simulation with adventure. Players guide Stella, a Spiritfarer, and her feline companion, Daffodil, as they transport the spirits of the deceased to the afterlife. Stella completes quests for these spirits aboard her ship. Praised for its beautiful music, art, and animation, Spiritfarer offers a deeply emotional and empathetic gameplay experience. As an indie title, it has achieved impressive success, selling over a million copies.

4) Loop Hero

Loop Hero is a unique roguelike game where you indirectly help a hero on their journey. The hero automatically travels a randomly created path, and you play cards to make their travels easier. What makes Loop Hero different is that you don’t directly control the hero – they keep going no matter what. Your job is to improve their chances of survival, which is challenging! It’s similar to being a Dungeon Master in a tabletop RPG where the players continue their adventure regardless of your plans.

5) Katamari Damacy

Released in 2004 for the PlayStation 2, Katamari Damacy is a unique and quirky action-puzzle game. It’s the first game in a small series and stands out as one of the most unusual titles for the console. Players control a miniature prince tasked with recreating the stars and Moon after his father, the King of All Cosmos, accidentally shatters them. You do this by rolling around and collecting objects – starting small and gradually picking up larger ones – until you’ve gathered enough mass to become a star yourself. Heavily inspired by Japanese culture, Katamari Damacy is wonderfully surreal and delightfully strange.
