After seven years, the Star Wars saga might be heading for another significant loss. Death has always been a part of the story in the Star Wars galaxy. Every period in the franchise has featured impactful character deaths, like Obi-Wan Kenobi in A New Hope, Qui-Gon Jinn in The Phantom Menace, and Han Solo in The Force Awakens. Tragedy is central to Star Wars, and while the heroes often triumph, victory frequently comes at a great cost – sometimes even the sacrifice of an entire team, as seen in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. This willingness to die for what they believe in is what makes the franchise’s message so strong.
For almost ten years, Star Wars hasn’t killed off any major characters. This is partly because the film series paused, and also because Disney+ shows often only last one season. This limited run makes it harder for audiences to become deeply connected to characters before their stories end, unlike with the original Star Wars heroes. The last significant character death was in 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker, when Kylo Ren died soon after turning to the light side. But now, Disney seems to be preparing for another major loss with Din Djarin in Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu.
Star Wars Hints At Din Djarin’s Death In The Mandalorian & Grogu

To mark May the 4th, a new trailer for the Pedro Pascal film was released, focusing on the important mentor-student relationships seen throughout the Star Wars saga. The trailer shows moments between Luke and Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon and young Obi-Wan, Jyn and Galen Erso, and Rey and Luke Skywalker, drawing parallels to Din Djarin and Grogu. However, it also points out a sad pattern – the older character often dies, leaving the younger one to continue their work. This suggests Din Djarin may face a similar fate in The Mandalorian & Grogu, ultimately allowing Grogu to forge his own path. Adding to this idea, the official Star Wars account posted on X, hinting that Din’s “greatest mission could be his last.”
It’s not the first time marketing for The Mandalorian & Grogu has suggested Din Djarin might die. Trailers for the movie feature him talking about training Grogu to be self-sufficient in case something happens to him. While this could simply be acknowledging the natural lifespan difference between their species, the trailers, combined with Din’s narration in The Mandalorian & Grogu, now make it seem more likely that his story could end in the film.
Din’s death in The Mandalorian & Grogu could be the film’s most powerful emotional moment. It would also give the story real weight, something some have felt was missing from recent Star Wars movies. While the film seems to focus on Din and Grogu simply traveling and working as mercenaries, audiences might expect a more significant and impactful storyline.
Why Killing Din Djarin Is Risky For Star Wars

Removing Din Djarin from the story might solve a current problem for The Mandalorian & Grogu, but it could cause bigger issues down the line. Although Grogu is a compelling character, it’s hard to see how his story could continue meaningfully without a strong connection to another character, especially if Din were to die. This could prematurely end a potentially long-running franchise, particularly because Din and Grogu’s story isn’t as tightly bound by existing Star Wars lore as some others, giving it more freedom to evolve.
It’s just awful timing, honestly. Star Wars was finally figuring out how to really use Pedro Pascal’s popularity. Because his character, Din Djarin, wears that iconic helmet almost all the time in The Mandalorian on Disney+, we haven’t gotten to see Pedro’s face much. He’s been great at promoting the show and the upcoming movie, but it’s not the same as actually seeing him on screen. The trailer for The Mandalorian & Grogu showed Din without his helmet for a good portion of the film, and it felt like they were setting things up to keep his face visible going forward. But now, if something happens to the character… well, Star Wars won’t be able to fully benefit from Pedro being a big star.
The Mandalorian & Grogu hits theaters on May 22, 2026.
