As the release of 007: First Light on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S approaches in just over a week, the developers at IO Interactive have been sharing more details about the game. In a recent interview with GamesRadar, the game’s narrative and cinematics director, Martin Emborg, stated his ambition for 007: First Light to be considered the ultimate James Bond video game.
I was a little surprised to hear what Emborg said! Everyone always talks about GoldenEye 007 on the Nintendo 64 as the greatest James Bond game of all time. But honestly, I think a lot of that is just us remembering how amazing it was when it came out. Back then, console shooters weren’t really a thing, and that splitscreen multiplayer was just incredible. Plus, there have been other Bond games since then – I remember really enjoying James Bond 007: Nightfire back in 2002.
So, I was chatting with the folks behind the new 007 game, First Light, and they’re aiming high! When asked what they want people to think of the game years from now, the lead guy, Emborg, joked that he just wants everyone to agree it’s the best Bond game ever. Patrick Gibson, who’s playing Bond, one-upped him and said, “Or just the best game ever!” Emborg was totally on board with that, saying that’s really the least they’re hoping for. They’re clearly aiming to make something special!
Many video games have been made based on James Bond, but most focused on one type of gameplay, like fast-paced shooting or quiet sneaking. IO Interactive, known for the fluid social stealth in the Hitman games, is now bringing a fresh and unique approach to the franchise with 007: First Light.
Hakan Abrak, the CEO of the studio behind the new James Bond game, 007: First Light, recently discussed plans for the game after its release. In an interview, he highlighted the strong partnership between his team at IO Interactive and Amazon, who own the James Bond license, emphasizing their shared commitment to delivering a high-quality experience.
When we first started working with Amazon on 007: First Light, there was a natural adjustment period, as you’d expect with any new partnership,” explained Abrak. “Everyone needed to get acquainted. But they quickly recognized the progress we’d already made, and we moved forward with a collaborative effort, focusing on the marketing strategy and key milestones.
We’ve had a consistent executive producer from MGM, and now Amazon, who’s been with us since the beginning and remains a key part of the team. Amazon quickly recognized the potential of the game, and after investing in and acquiring the property, they were committed to ensuring high quality. Once they experienced the game themselves, they became strong supporters, and we really appreciate their backing.
Abrak mentioned that if the game 007: First Light is successful, a sequel is possible, thanks to the strong working relationship built during its creation.
The game 007: First Light will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S starting May 29th. A version for the Nintendo Switch 2 is also planned for release later this summer.
