1 Original Avenger Has No Definitive Future In The MCU (& Nobody Seems To Care)

The futures of most of the original Avengers team have been revealed or established within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but one member has been consistently overlooked. The first Avengers – Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, Thor, Hawkeye, and Hulk – initially assembled at the conclusion of Phase 1. While a seventh character could be considered a core part of the team, Marvel hasn’t focused on what happens with them recently.

Although only half of the original Avengers are still active in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Marvel has addressed the future of each member. However, one key player – Nick Fury – has been overlooked after appearing in a couple of less-successful projects. Given his iconic status and Samuel L. Jackson’s legendary performance, Fury deserves a significant role in the MCU’s future. The lack of communication from Marvel about his potential involvement is concerning.

All the Original Avengers Have MCU Futures Except Nick Fury

As a huge Marvel fan, I’m honestly stunned to hear Nick Fury wasn’t part of the big discussions about where the MCU is headed. Think about it – he’s been crucial to everything since the very start! He showed up at the end of the first Iron Man back in 2008 to recruit Tony Stark, and he’s the one who really brought the Avengers together. He’d worked with Captain Marvel years before, back in ’95, and that experience clearly shaped his vision for the team. You could almost consider him the seventh member of the Avengers, he was so integral to its formation.

It’s surprising that Marvel hasn’t revealed any plans for Nick Fury, especially since they’ve shared details about the futures of other Avengers. We know Mark Ruffalo will return as Banner in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Chris Hemsworth as Thor in Avengers: Doomsday, and there’s talk of a second season for Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye. Doctor Doom’s introduction to the MCU is expected to tie into Tony Stark’s story, and rumors suggest we might see different versions of Captain America (Chris Evans) again. Plus, Scarlett Johansson is still collaborating with Marvel on a new, unannounced project to continue Black Widow’s story. However, Nick Fury’s future with Marvel remains unclear.

Why is Nick Fury Being Ignored By Marvel Studios?

Nick Fury has been a key figure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since the beginning, making it surprising that Marvel seems willing to move on from him. While his recent projects, like Secret Invasion and The Marvels, haven’t performed well – Secret Invasion receiving low ratings and The Marvels underperforming in theaters – these were made during a period of disruption for Marvel. The 2023 writers’ and actors’ strikes forced changes to creative plans, suggesting that future stories featuring Nick Fury could be much stronger.

Marvel Studios had to rethink its approach to TV series production while developing Daredevil: Born Again, a change that happened after Secret Invasion had already premiered on Disney+. The negative response to Secret Invasion likely led to a diminished role for the character of Fury, even though his appearance in The Marvels was generally well-received, despite the film’s disappointing box office performance. Considering how important Fury has been to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and despite his recent underwhelming storylines, fans are eager to see Samuel L. Jackson reprise the role.

What Role Could Nick Fury Have in the MCU’s Future?

As much as I’d love to see another solo Nick Fury story after Secret Invasion, it doesn’t seem very likely. Still, there are definitely possibilities for Samuel L. Jackson to reprise the role, and the most promising seem to be in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. They’ve already announced 27 actors returning for Doomsday, including Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, but sadly, Fury isn’t on that list yet. There’s talk that even more familiar faces could be added, and honestly, I’m really hoping Nick Fury will be one of them!

It’s likely Nick Fury will play a key role in future Marvel Cinematic Universe projects. This could include connecting with the new X-Men team, helping to get the Blade reboot back on track, and assisting the Fantastic Four from Earth 828 as they integrate into the main MCU timeline. In the Marvel comics, Fury has been central to major storylines like Siege, Dark Reign, and Original Sin – eventually even taking on the role of “the Unseen,” observing Earth and other universes like Uatu the Watcher. Giving Fury a larger role would be a significant and exciting change for the MCU, and fans hope Marvel recognizes his potential.
