The X-Men are often depicted in stories set in bleak, dystopian futures where mutants are on the brink of extinction. Their first exploration of this theme, “Days of Future Past,” remains a benchmark for dark comic book storytelling. Widely considered one of Marvel’s greatest stories, it portrays a future where, after Senator Kelly is assassinated, humans wage war on mutants. They build Sentinels to fight them, but the Sentinels eventually turn against everyone and take control of the planet. This story is also known for its memorable and often drastic redesigns of popular X-Men and other characters within that grim future.
Here are the standout original character designs from Marvel Comics that appear specifically in the “Days of Future Past” timeline, also called Earth-811.
10) Jubilee

Jubilee is usually the most cheerful and hopeful member of the X-Men, so seeing her dressed in plain, dark clothes shows how dire the future has become. She traded her bright yellow and pink outfit for black, blue, and dark red to hide from the Sentinels. The only hints of her former vibrant style were her large gold earrings and a worn yellow cloak, which she was eventually forced to leave behind while escaping. Seeing Jubilee become such a serious and hardened fighter is truly sad, and it highlights how much the world has deteriorated.
9) Master Mold

The future is a terrifying place, controlled by ruthless, unfeeling Sentinel robots, and at the top is the colossal and brilliant Master Mold. This giant Sentinel visually demonstrates his power. Unlike the typical pink and purple Sentinels, Master Mold is primarily red, making him stand out as even more threatening. His incredibly large head houses the massive computing power he needs to process endless calculations. Many fans consider this to be one of the most impressive Master Mold designs Marvel Comics has ever created.
8) Psylocke

Even when mutants are nearly wiped out, the villainous Hellfire Club continues to exist, manipulating former X-Men to join their cause. Psylocke is one such victim, corrupted into becoming the Red Queen, a powerful member of the Hellfire Club under Shinobi Shaw. Like the other Hellfire Club queens, Psylocke’s appearance is designed to command attention and respect. She wears a striking, tight-fitting red and black suit covered in spikes, and a large cape that signifies her status. The outfit is both shocking and intimidating, clearly demonstrating how far this once-heroic X-Man has fallen.
7) Bishop

Bishop is a famous mutant from the future dedicated to fighting for freedom, and the Bishop seen in “Days of Future Past” is consistent with that reputation. Like other versions of this energy-absorbing mutant, he’s traveled back in time to fight the Sentinels and avoid a terrible future. To prepare for this mission, Bishop wears practical, durable, futuristic armor and carries many weapons in pouches. He’s also easily recognizable thanks to his long, red cloak. His entire look highlights that he’s a battle-ready warrior committed to fighting against the Sentinels.
6) Midnight

Amiko Kobayashi, raised as Wolverine’s adopted daughter, trains to become a skilled ninja. In an alternate reality (Earth-811), after losing contact with Wolverine, she operates as Midnight, a masked hero for hire. Midnight wears a tight, full-body purple suit covered with large red armor plates and a distinctive crown-like headpiece. She fights using two katana swords and sais. Though not the most subtle outfit for a ninja, Midnight’s costume is very noticeable and effectively conceals her identity—until a dramatic moment when she reveals her face to Wolverine.
5) Ahab

As a fan, I have to say Ahab is a truly frightening villain, just like the character he’s named after in Moby Dick. He’s a cyborg geneticist working for the Sentinels, and he’s the one who created the Hound Program – a really disturbing project where mutants are brainwashed to hunt down other mutants. Everything about his design screams hatred for mutants. He actually let most of his body be replaced with machines, just to become a better hunter. It’s a creepy look, and it’s a clear nod to the original Ahab – they even gave him a beard and a harpoon! It’s a brilliant way to connect him to the source material and emphasize how obsessed he is with this hunt.
4) Mutant Prisoners

In most versions of the “Days of Future Past” story and its related tales, characters are typically seen wearing green jumpsuits. These uniforms, enforced by the Sentinel robots who control them, are worn by nearly all mutants. A large “M” is prominently displayed on the front and back of each suit, constantly reminding everyone of the mutants’ oppressed status. Mutants are also forced to wear collars that suppress their powers. Iconic X-Men like Kitty Pryde, Colossus, Storm, and Magneto must wear these outfits to avoid being killed by the Sentinels. Though simple in design, the jumpsuits powerfully symbolize the historical persecution and genocide faced by many groups throughout history.
3) Rachel Summers

Rachel Summers, a compelling character from Earth-811, is the possible future daughter of Cyclops and Jean Grey. As a child, she was captured by the Sentinels and tragically forced to hunt down escaped mutants for Ahab. This cruel role was reflected in her original costume: a spiked leather suit resembling a dog collar. After breaking free from brainwashing and traveling to the present, Rachel redesigned the suit, giving it a sleek red look to represent her newfound link to the powerful Phoenix Force.
2) Nimrod

I have to say, Nimrod is the most frightening thing I’ve ever seen. He’s not just another Sentinel; he’s the peak of their technology, built solely to wipe out mutants, not just today, but throughout time itself. His design is completely different from any Sentinel before – massive, blocky, and just…inhumanly powerful. The stark white metal and sleek build aren’t just advanced, they feel like a twisted statement about the Sentinel program’s obsession with ‘purity.’ Honestly, everything about him screams terror, and he perfectly embodies everything the X-Men are fighting against. He’s a truly chilling creation.
1) Wolverine

Before the movie “Days of Future Past,” Wolverine was best known for his bright yellow and blue costume. But this story introduced a more realistic look for the character. Instead of his usual spandex suit, Wolverine wore everyday clothes, most notably a brown jacket with fur trim that hinted at his animal side. This tough, new style was a significant departure from previous X-Men outfits. Now, Wolverine often wears casual clothes along with the famous jacket even when fighting villains. While the outfit was originally designed to help him blend in and avoid detection by Sentinels, it quickly became one of his most recognizable features among fans.
