3 Difficult SNES Games That You Could Easily Beat Today

Back in the 1990s, Nintendo games were notorious for being incredibly challenging – a reputation often called “Nintendo Hard.” This was often because arcade games, designed to quickly take players’ money, were brought home to consoles without adjusting the difficulty. While some of these games felt nearly impossible at the time, they’re actually much more manageable today. Thanks to online guides and improved gaming skills, many can be completed in just a weekend.

Remember those Super Nintendo games your older brother or sister probably beat for you in the ’90s? You can now play through them yourself!

3) Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy’s Kong Quest

Okay, so as a retro gamer, I can tell you Donkey Kong Country 2 is notorious for being the toughest of the original SNES trilogy. The first game had some challenging parts, sure, but it wasn’t that hard overall. And while Donkey Kong Country 3 threw a few curveballs, it just didn’t hit the same level of difficulty as the second one. But honestly, things are way easier now! Thanks to the internet, finding help and watching walkthroughs makes even the trickiest levels manageable.

One of the main reasons DKC 2 is so challenging is its incredible variety. The game introduces a new mechanic, then doesn’t revisit it for several levels, leaving you to relearn it. Thankfully, being able to pause and quickly look up levels online makes things much easier. While online guides help with most games, DKC 2 really benefits from them. You’re just refreshing your memory, rather than watching someone else play, so it doesn’t feel like you’re cheating.

2) Earthbound

For me, Earthbound really captures what a lot of RPGs from that time were like. If you grew up in the ’90s, you probably hit a wall in some game, totally stuck and needing help. I remember always bugging my older neighbor to finish the final boss for me!

Now that you’re older and your brain is fully developed, you’ll find it much easier to come up with a good plan. I still remember how surprisingly simple it was to defeat Giygas in Earthbound when I played it as an adult. What felt incredibly challenging at age seven seemed basic when I revisited the game. This is true for many role-playing games from that time, but Earthbound stands out to me as the best example of the genre.

1) Super Castlevania IV

The original Castlevania games on the NES were famous for being incredibly difficult, with challenging enemies and tricky controls. When the series moved to the Super Nintendo, the developers at Konami made Super Castlevania IV noticeably easier, making it one of the most accessible games in the series.

Despite its innovations, many players found Castlevania IV‘s platforming difficult, especially in the eighth stage. Four years later, Konami released Castlevania: Dracula X, which brought the series back to its challenging roots. It showed SNES players what a truly difficult game felt like, making Super Castlevania IV seem easy in comparison. If you play it today, it will likely feel even simpler, particularly if you’re used to modern Metroidvania games. The genre has evolved a lot since 1991, and those newer games have prepared you to easily handle the challenges of Castlevania IV. So, well done!
