9) “Days of Rage”
Bruce Banner constantly worries about losing control to the Hulk, and the story arc “Days of Rage” brings that fear to life. In this arc, Bruce actually had managed to fully control the Hulk, but he was haunted by the possibility of his other personality taking over. The villain Nightmare exploits this fear, possessing the Hulk and turning him into a raging, uncontrollable monster. This corrupted Hulk then attacks everyone around him, including the Avengers, S.H.I.E.L.D., Spider-Man, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist, easily defeating them all. Seeing the Hulk fight other heroes is always exciting, and “Days of Rage” does it exceptionally well.
8) “Always on My Mind”
For years, the Abomination has been a major enemy of the Hulk, but he didn’t become his ultimate foe until the “Always on My Mind” story arc. The Abomination saw himself and the Hulk as monsters, and he was enraged when the Hulk found happiness and married Betty Ross. In a shocking and cruel act, the Abomination murdered Betty by poisoning her. This led to Betty’s father, General Ross, convincing Bruce Banner to transform back into the Hulk to avenge her death. What follows is a powerful, sad, and action-filled story of an emotional battle between the Hulk and the Abomination, and a heartbreaking look at a hero losing his only chance at a happy life.
7) Ultimate Wolverine vs Hulk
The Ultimate Universe gave writers the freedom to tell darker, more intense stories, and they definitely delivered with the rivalry between Wolverine and the Hulk. These two characters have been battling since Wolverine’s debut, and the miniseries Ultimate Wolverine vs Hulk offered a fresh, exciting take on their first fight. This version of the story portrays the Hulk as a truly monstrous, man-eating villain, and Wolverine is sent to eliminate him. The fight is incredibly brutal – the Hulk initially tears Wolverine apart, but his healing factor allows him to recover and keep fighting! Ultimate Wolverine vs Hulk is a wonderfully over-the-top, action-packed story and stands out as one of the best in the Ultimate Universe.
6) Hulk: The End
One of the most heartbreaking Hulk stories, Hulk: The End, paints a grim picture of a distant future where the Hulk is seemingly the last being on Earth after a nuclear apocalypse. Despite the desolate landscape, he’s not entirely alone – Bruce Banner and the Hulk continue their perpetual conflict. Bruce has lost all hope and wants to end it all, while the Hulk remains determined to survive and be left in peace. The story delves into their thoughts on the ruined world and their complicated relationship. It’s a deeply sad tale with a particularly devastating conclusion, skillfully exploring what Bruce and the Hulk truly want and whether their struggles were ultimately meaningful.
5) Hulk: Gray
When the Hulk first appeared in comics, he was originally gray, but was quickly changed to the green version most people recognize. The comic series Hulk: Gray revisits and expands on the story of how the Hulk came to be, focusing on his early days as a gray monster. Through therapy sessions with his friend and doctor, Doc Samson, Bruce Banner remembers his first transformation and having to go into hiding from the military. Hulk: Gray presents a more realistic and serious take on the Hulk’s beginnings, delving into Bruce’s emotional response and self-reflection on the life-altering trauma he experienced. This series effectively explores the crucial first days that defined the Hulk’s character.
4) Future Imperfect
The storyline Future Imperfect presented a particularly memorable alternate version of the Hulk. While the more controlled “Professor Hulk” persona was in charge, he was sent 90 years into the future, arriving in a world devastated by nuclear war. There, he encountered Maestro, an evil, future version of himself. After a global catastrophe, this Hulk lost control, fully embraced his monstrous side, and became a ruthless dictator. Ruling the city of Dystopia, he’d eliminated most of the world’s heroes. Professor Hulk then joined a resistance movement, forced to use all his intelligence and strength to defeat this terrifying future self who had lost his humanity.
3) Immortal Hulk
The 50-issue run of Immortal Hulk is considered one of the most significant and memorable Hulk stories ever told. It explores difficult ideas about who we are, past mistakes, death, and being reborn, using frightening imagery and cosmic horror. The story reveals that Bruce Banner and the Hulk—along with all those affected by gamma radiation—are immortal. This immortality is connected to a powerful, ancient being known as the One Below All. When a gamma mutant dies, they enter a place called the Below Place, and can return to life through the Green Door. The series also revisits classic versions of the Hulk, like Joe Fix-It, Green Scar, and the Devil Hulk. Ultimately, Immortal Hulk is a masterful blend of cosmic and existential horror that reimagines the Hulk in a fresh and daring way.
2) World War Hulk
In World War Hulk, the Hulk finally retaliates against the world that has consistently mistreated and vilified him. Following his exile to the planet Sakaar by the Illuminati (as seen in Planet Hulk), he returns to Earth seeking revenge. Accompanied by an army of warriors from Sakaar, the Hulk begins tracking down the members of the Illuminati – Iron Man, Mr. Fantastic, Doctor Strange, and Black Bolt. Any hero who attempts to stop his vengeance is quickly and decisively defeated. While always known for his rage, World War Hulk showcases the Hulk reaching unprecedented levels of fury, putting the entire planet at risk.
1) “Planet Hulk”
On Earth, the Hulk was seen as a dangerous monster, but when he’s stranded on the harsh planet Sakaar, he finds a different path. In the popular story arc “Planet Hulk,” a group of heroes known as the Illuminati send the Hulk into space, fearing his power. His ship crashes on Sakaar, a savage world controlled by a cruel ruler called the Red King. The Hulk is captured and forced into slavery, fighting as a gladiator. But his incredible strength allows him to inspire other gladiators and the people of Sakaar to rebel against the Red King. “Planet Hulk” is considered a defining Hulk story, placing him in an unfamiliar world where he finally finds acceptance and even love.
