The 2000 film Scary Movie, starring the Wayans Brothers, was a huge success that launched a trend of combining horror and comedy – a trend that’s remained popular ever since. Other popular examples include films like Zombieland, Ready or Not, Tucker & Dale vs. Evil, and Bodies Bodies Bodies. With a new Scary Movie installment coming out later this year, one of the top horror-comedies from the 2020s is about to leave Netflix.
You only have until March 1st to watch The Blackening on Netflix! This hilarious horror-comedy, released in 2022, started as a short film by the comedy group 3Peat. The movie follows seven Black friends who come together for a Juneteenth weekend at a cabin. Their fun quickly turns into a terrifying game when a masked killer forces them to answer trivia questions – testing their knowledge of both the streets and horror movies – if they want to survive. It was written by Tracy Oliver and Dewayne Perkins.
The Blackening Is a Hilariously Sharp Horror-Comedy
As a horror fan, I think The Blackening is brilliant – it’s quickly become one of my favorite horror-comedies. It perfectly nails what this genre should be: funny, scary, and smart. The movie doesn’t just poke fun at horror tropes, it actively takes them apart, specifically the tired cliché that Black characters are always the first to go. From the very beginning, with its tagline ‘We can’t all die first,’ it flips that idea on its head. The plot – a group forced to play Black history trivia by a killer while fighting for their lives – is ingenious. It’s not just about survival though; the movie makes you think about why that trope exists in the first place and honestly, it forces us to confront our own biases. It’s a really clever and effective film.
The Blackening cleverly pokes fun at horror tropes and racial stereotypes, but it does so without being overly serious or losing its comedic edge. The movie relies on quick, witty dialogue and genuinely hilarious scenes, using horror elements as a foundation for comedy. The scares and suspense are perfectly timed to enhance the humor. It’s a genuinely funny and welcome addition to the horror-comedy genre, and its impressive 87% critics score and 85% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes are well-deserved, earning it the “Certified Fresh” label.
Where to Stream The Blackening After It Leaves Netflix?
If you enjoy scary and funny movies, be sure to watch The Blackening on Netflix while you can. It’s currently only available there, and it doesn’t look like it will be added to other major streaming services anytime soon. While some platforms haven’t announced their upcoming releases yet, it seems likely The Blackening will eventually be removed from streaming. If it does, you’ll still be able to rent or buy it online.
