10) General Zod

As a huge Superman fan, I’ve always been fascinated by the backstory of General Zod. Before Krypton exploded, he was basically a power-hungry military guy trying to take over the planet. When that failed, he and his loyal followers were banished to this otherworldly prison called the Phantom Zone. Ironically, that’s what saved them from Krypton’s destruction! Years later, they busted out and became some of Superman’s most dangerous enemies, using their Kryptonian abilities to cause real trouble. Zod eventually took over a distant planet called Jekuul, renaming it New Kandor in a desperate attempt to rebuild Krypton. But tragedy struck when his wife, Ursa, was killed fighting these alien invaders, the Khund. Devastated, he just gave up on the planet and his whole dream, abandoning New Kandor completely.

Mongul is a ruthless alien overlord obsessed with war. He rules from Warworld, a gigantic, mobile fortress that he uses to conquer planets and grow his empire. As a cruel and sadistic leader, Mongul forces those he enslaves to fight to the death for his amusement. Brion Markov, known as Geo-Force, is the prince and future king of Markovia, a country in Eastern Europe. He developed the ability to control earth and stone after a procedure performed by Dr. Helga Jace. This was done so he could fight Baron Bedlam, who was leading a rebellion against Markovia. Brion successfully stopped Bedlam’s invasion with his newfound powers and help from the superhero team, the Outsiders. He then joined the Outsiders and moved to America to better control his abilities. After his brother, King Gregor, passed away, Brion returned to Markovia to become king. He worked hard to rule his country well, but unfortunately, he couldn’t prevent its destruction by Talia al Ghul and the League of Assassins.

With that power and his incredibly strong New God army, he protects everyone, including the whole Multiverse, from this terrifying villain, Darkseid, who rules the planet Apokolips. What’s really cool is that because of his connection to the Source, Highfather is one of the few beings who can actually hurt Darkseid. He might not get all the attention, but he’s essential to the story, and he represents everything hopeful and good in the DC Universe. He’s Darkseid’s perfect opposite, really.
