While comics are famous for their exciting superhero battles, romance is often just as captivating. Throughout publishers like DC and Marvel, relationship struggles can be as thrilling as any fight against crime. Romance comics were once incredibly popular, almost matching superhero sales. And nothing creates more tension than a love triangle! Many of these complex romantic storylines have spanned years, becoming essential parts of characters’ personalities and histories. Here are some of the most memorable love triangles ever seen in comics.
Love triangles frequently make characters more relatable and create compelling stories filled with drama, humor, and emotional depth. Whether they involve main characters or supporting ones, these situations often center around a competition for affection.
10) Mr. Fantastic, Namor, Invisible Woman

Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic) and Sue Storm (Invisible Woman) appear to be one of Marvel’s most stable couples, but their marriage is complicated by Namor, the Sub-Mariner. Namor developed feelings for Sue after she showed him compassion, and while she’s devoted to her husband, she occasionally finds herself drawn to Namor. Reed’s emotional distance doesn’t help matters. In many alternate Marvel storylines, Sue leaves Reed to become Namor’s queen in Atlantis. This complicated dynamic makes them one of the earliest and most famous love triangles in Marvel comics.
9) Vision, Wonder Man, Scarlet Witch

Scarlet Witch’s love life is already complex because of her relationship with the android Vision. But it gets even more complicated! Vision was originally created using the brain patterns of another Avenger, Wonder Man. This means Vision and Wonder Man share an attraction to Scarlet Witch, leading to intense jealousy and frequent fights between them. While Scarlet Witch and Vision were once married, they later divorced, and she briefly dated Wonder Man.
8) Cyclops, Jean Grey, Emma Frost

The X-Men comics are full of relationship drama, and the connection between Cyclops, Jean Grey, and Emma Frost is one of the most tangled. It started with Emma acting as a counselor for Cyclops and Jean’s marriage, but she then began a psychic affair with Cyclops. When Jean found out, she almost killed Emma. After Jean’s death, Cyclops and Emma tried a real relationship, but it ended because they both cheated on each other. When Jean returned to life, she and Cyclops got back together. Surprisingly, this complicated love triangle isn’t even the most dramatic one Cyclops and Jean have been involved in!
7) Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, Joker

Harley Quinn began as the Joker’s sidekick and girlfriend in Batman: The Animated Series. While they became famous as a villainous couple, it was obvious the Joker was controlling and mistreated Harley. The series also showed Harley forming a close friendship with Poison Ivy, which later developed into a romantic relationship in the comics after Harley left the Joker. Harley and Ivy now have a much healthier connection than Harley ever had with the Joker. However, the Joker doesn’t accept losing and has repeatedly, unsuccessfully, tried to get Harley back.
6) Superman, Lois Lane, Lana Lang

It’s a well-known joke that Superman often falls for women whose names start with the letters ‘LL’. Throughout his adventures, he’s been torn between two main loves: Lois Lane and Lana Lang. Lana was his childhood sweetheart back in Smallville, while Lois, a driven reporter, captured his heart after he moved to Metropolis. For years, Lois and Lana were rivals, both vying for Superman’s affection, which created a lot of conflict. While most fans now agree that Lois is Superman’s true love, the love triangle between the three of them went on for many years.
5) Spider-Man, Mary Jane Watson, Black Cat

A key part of Spider-Man’s appeal is how relatable he is, even when things go wrong, like in his love life. While he once seemed unlucky in love, over the years he’s had several relationships. Similar to his double life as both Peter Parker and Spider-Man, his romantic interests often reflect this duality. He’s famously connected to Mary Jane Watson, who genuinely loves and has been married to Peter for a long time. But he also shares a complicated history with Black Cat, who was initially drawn to Spider-Man’s persona but later developed feelings for Peter himself. After changes were made to his history, specifically his marriage to MJ, Marvel has increasingly emphasized this love triangle in Spider-Man’s stories.
4) Nightwing, Batgirl, Starfire

Nightwing is famous for the complicated romantic relationships he’s had with both Batgirl and Starfire. He’s been close to both heroes for years, even becoming engaged to each of them at different times. As part of the Bat-Family, Batgirl was his first love, and they’ve always supported each other through difficult moments. He also shares a deep connection with Starfire, forged during their time as Teen Titans, and they’re incredibly devoted to one another. It’s easy to see why fans debate who Nightwing should ultimately be with – it’s a truly compelling love triangle.
3) Batman, Catwoman, Talia al Ghul

It’s not surprising that Batman is drawn to women who are as complex and troubled as he is. His main love interests, Catwoman and Talia al Ghul, both have troubled pasts and questionable morals. Batman consistently tries to guide them towards a better path, with varying results. While Catwoman often keeps him at arm’s length, she’s gradually become more of a hero than a villain. Talia, despite being the mother of his child, has fully embraced her villainous role within the League of Assassins. However, both women clearly have strong feelings for Batman, and their complicated relationship has always been a compelling part of the Batman story.
2) Cyclops, Wolverine, Jean Grey

Cyclops and Wolverine, two prominent members of the X-Men, have a long-standing rivalry fueled by many things, but primarily their feelings for Jean Grey. While Jean and Cyclops have a strong and current marriage, she’s consistently found herself attracted to Wolverine’s rebellious nature. Wolverine remembers Jean as the first person who showed him compassion and recognized his humanity, leading him to always harbor feelings for her. Their competition over Jean’s affection has led to numerous conflicts, but things shifted during the recent Krakoa era when the three of them explored a polyamorous relationship.
1) Archie, Betty, Veronica

For over 80 years, Archie, Betty, and Veronica have been at the heart of Archie Comics, creating arguably the most well-known love triangle in history. Archie is constantly torn between the sweet and dependable Betty and the glamorous and outgoing Veronica. What makes this triangle unique is that Betty and Veronica are friends, even when they’re competing for Archie’s affection, keeping things relatively lighthearted. This complicated, yet endearing, relationship continues to define the very idea of a love triangle, and it seems destined to remain unresolved.
