Many gamers enjoy fully exploring games, discovering all the secrets and earning achievements. Others prefer speedrunning – completing a game as quickly as possible. Speedrunning often involves clever techniques like using glitches and shortcuts, and it has a large and dedicated online community. We’ve compiled a list of 10 of the most impressive speedrun records, presenting them from the longest to the shortest completion times.
1) Doom Eternal: The Ancient Gods Part 1
Doom Eternal: The Ancient Gods Part 1 is an expansion for the game Doom Eternal. On February 21, 2022, a player named therealpaisano achieved an incredible speedrun, completing the entire expansion in just 4 minutes and 43 seconds. This is remarkably fast – much faster than the developers intended! According to the website How Long to Beat, most players take around 5 hours to finish, 6.5 hours to complete the main game and side quests, and a full 7.5 hours to fully explore everything Doom Eternal’s Ancient Gods Part 1 has to offer. Therealpaisano pulled off this amazing feat in under 5 minutes using some clever techniques, and wasn’t even trying to set a record when he began.
2) Outlast
Speedrunning survival horror games isn’t common—most players like to take their time and enjoy the experience. But ItzDoVi recently completed Outlast incredibly fast. On January 19, 2024, they set a new speedrunning record with a time of 4 minutes, 39 seconds, and 160 milliseconds. A typical playthrough takes around 5 hours, and for those who aim for 100% completion, it can take over 11 hours. While speedrunning misses much of the game’s story and details, finishing in under 5 minutes is still a remarkable feat.
3) Hollow Knight
Hollow Knight is a challenging side-scrolling adventure game in the style of classic Metroidvania titles, bringing back the satisfying difficulty of older 8-bit games. It’s a lengthy experience, taking most players around 27 hours to finish the main story, and about 41.5 hours to complete everything. True completionists can expect to spend around 65 hours exploring all Hollow Knight has to offer. Remarkably, one player, Staxis, finished the game in just 4 minutes, 32 seconds, and 48 milliseconds using a glitch, setting a new record on April 21, 2022.
4) Elden Ring
Anyone who’s played Elden Ring knows it’s a huge game that takes a long time to finish. The main story alone requires around 60 hours, and completing everything can take over 100. While a dedicated player might spend 135 hours exploring, HYP3RSOMNIAC completed an unrestricted speedrun of the game in just 3 minutes and 56 seconds on August 15, 2022. They achieved this incredible time using a teleportation glitch, often called the “zip glitch,” and other helpful tools.
5) The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
If you’re familiar with my writing on ComicBook, you know how much I love The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. It’s also a pretty lengthy game – most players spend between 27 and 37 hours finishing it, depending on how thoroughly they explore. But a player named Murph_E recently completed the game in an incredible 3 minutes, 50 seconds, and 917 milliseconds by using clever tricks and glitches. A video shows him quickly moving backward and even passing through walls to reach the end. It took years to discover all these glitches, and he set the record on May 11, 2023. It’s a really strange but impressive feat!
6) Super Mario Bros. 3
I’m a huge fan of Super Mario Bros. 3, right up there with Ocarina of Time! Seriously, I think it’s the best game ever made for the original Nintendo. It’s a pretty big game, you have to travel all over the place, but you can definitely see everything in about six hours if you really focus. And speaking of fast, you won’t believe this – on July 21, 2023, Kuto1K absolutely crushed it with a speedrun that took only 3 minutes, 0 seconds, and 666 milliseconds! It was a new world record, and it was amazing to watch.
7) Super Meat Boy
Super Meat Boy is a fantastic but incredibly challenging platformer that demands precise timing. While it’s a blast to play, its difficulty makes it highly competitive and popular with speedrunners. Players can expect to spend at least nine hours finishing the main story, but completionists might spend upwards of 46 hours exploring all the extra content. Remarkably, Crep completed the entire game in just 2 minutes, 12 seconds, and 483 milliseconds on June 3, 2017, utilizing a glitch called “Wrong War” and other advanced techniques.
8) Minecraft
Minecraft is a game where you can basically play however you want, so it doesn’t really have a traditional ending. However, most players consider defeating the Ender Dragon to be ‘beating’ the game, and it usually takes a significant amount of time and effort to prepare. Recently, a player named Guccigang completed Minecraft Bedrock Edition in an incredible 1 minute and 25 seconds! This amazing speedrun, achieved on July 7, 2023, relied on using several glitches, and it’s a record that will likely stand for a long time.
9) Getting Over It With Bennett Foddy
As a huge fan of unique gaming experiences, I have to talk about Getting Over It With Bennett Foddy. It came out in 2017 and it’s… well, it’s hard to describe! You control a guy in a cauldron, and you move by swinging a hammer to pull yourself around. It sounds strange, and it is, but it’s also incredibly engaging and surprisingly satisfying when you actually make progress. Most of us spend around 6 or 7 hours finishing it, but if you’re a perfectionist, you could easily sink 30 hours into it. But the real mind-blower? Someone named Blastbolt absolutely blitzed through the whole game in just 59 seconds and 885 milliseconds back in April 2023! Given how brutally difficult this game is, I honestly can’t imagine anyone breaking that record anytime soon.
10) Minesweeper
Most people know Minesweeper – it was often pre-installed on computers and a classic way to kill time. While it doesn’t seem like a typical speedrunning game, people actually compete to finish it as quickly as possible. According to How Long to Beat, completing the ‘main story’ takes around 36 minutes, but that’s debatable. The current world record, set by SheenSimpson on November 14, 2017, is unbelievably fast: just one second. It’s a record that’s probably here to stay – you could blink and miss the entire run!
