NCIS Finally Explained Why Timothy McGee Hasn’t Left Despite Years Of Disrespect

Timothy McGee has faced some difficulties, but he’s committed to staying with NCIS, and he recently shared his reasons why. Sean Murray, who has played his character the longest of anyone on the CBS show, is a favorite among many viewers. Though he wasn’t part of Leroy Jethro Gibbs’ initial team, it’s hard to imagine NCIS without McGee. However, staying on the show hasn’t always been easy for him.

Wow, the last couple of seasons of NCIS have really shaken things up, setting the stage for some big changes! For McGee, it’s been a particularly wild ride. He just learned he has a son he didn’t know about, a revelation that’s understandably thrown his personal life into turmoil. Professionally, though, he’s still stuck in neutral. It’s been years since he’s seen a clear path for advancement, and honestly, it’s been frustrating to watch. You’d think he’d have moved on by now, but there’s a really compelling reason why he’s stayed put, and it makes total sense.

Timothy McGee Effectively Confirmed His Fear Of The Unknown In NCIS Season 23

Season 23 of NCIS has been relentlessly fast-paced for Alden Parker and his team. They barely had a chance to pause, even after the death of Director Leon Vance, quickly moving on to handle the challenges of Fleet Week – a situation that unfortunately meant viewers didn’t get a proper farewell to Vance. However, amidst all the chaos, there was a touching moment where Vance opened up to Ellie Bishop, discussing her departure from the Major Crimes Response Team.

It seems McGee wasn’t upset with Bishop at all; he actually understood her desire for a more fulfilling life, which is why he respected her decision to go undercover. He even praised her courage for facing the unknown without letting fear hold her back. This revealed a new side of how McGee views people leaving the MCRT team. Before Ellie, those who left were usually driven to it by difficult circumstances. But Ellie chose to leave because she wanted to challenge herself and take a chance.

I’ve always felt that McGee was really held back by his own anxieties about leaving his comfort zone, and honestly, after so many years with the MCRT, I get it. He did try to shake things up once, but even then, it was still within the agency – he applied for Deputy Director, and he absolutely would have been great at the job. When he didn’t get it, it felt like he just lost the drive to try anything new at all.

Will McGee Ever Leave NCIS?

Losing McGee would be a major blow to the future of NCIS, especially if the show continues on CBS for many more seasons. The series has faced some tough times recently, and is just starting to recover. Now, more than ever, it needs consistent characters. As long as Sean Murray wants to stay with the show, his character will likely remain an important part of NCIS.

Now that Vance has passed away, McGee finally has a clear path forward after being stuck in his current position for years. This opens the door for him to become the new director, and it’s a perfect way for NCIS to keep his character engaging without having to make drastic changes to the show. It would be a huge missed opportunity not to take advantage of this situation.
