Even though Halloween is still several months off, you can enjoy a scary movie anytime! Horror films are becoming increasingly popular, and with both new releases in theaters and a huge selection available on streaming services, it’s easier than ever to watch them at home. You can revisit classic favorites or discover new ones – and enjoy all the thrills (and maybe a few screams!) in private.
Streaming services like Netflix and HBO Max are getting more expensive, but you can still find tons of movies and shows – including scary ones – on free platforms like Tubi, Plex, and Pluto TV. This May, these services added a lot of great horror titles, from a popular ’90s slasher film to a critically acclaimed movie from the 2000s. All you need to watch is a device and internet connection!
10. Green Room – Plex & Tubi

Jeremy Saulnier’s 2015 horror film, Green Room, is a thrilling and intense story about a struggling punk band that clashes with a dangerous group of neo-Nazis. While critically acclaimed – earning a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes – the movie, featuring the late Anton Yelchin and Patrick Stewart, hasn’t gotten the attention it deserves. Thankfully, it’s now available to stream on both Plex and Tubi, making it easier and more affordable to watch, after being added on May 1st.
Be warned: Green Room is a truly intense experience. From the instant the band gets cornered, the film delivers a constant sense of dread and excitement, keeping you gripping your seat. The suspenseful standoff never feels drawn out, and what sets it apart from many horror films is how realistically the characters react. They aren’t making brave, unbelievable choices – their fear and lack of experience lead to genuine, costly errors.
9. Leprechaun – Plex

Forget typical scary movies – Mark Jones’ Leprechaun (1993) is something else entirely. This cult classic is a wildly fun, over-the-top horror-comedy that doesn’t take itself seriously. It mixes classic horror tropes with Irish legends, creating a bizarre story about a mischievous creature who can be caught with a four-leaf clover. He’s strangely fixated on shining shoes and protecting his gold, and he pursues his victims in ridiculous ways – using a tricycle, wheelchair, and even a pogo stick! It’s a hilarious, wonderfully silly, and thoroughly enjoyable ride.
Even though St. Patrick’s Day is over, it’s always a good time to watch the movie Leprechaun, and now you can stream it for free! It became available on Plex’s free movie selection on May 1st, along with several other horror films.
8. Bram Stoker’s Dracula – Tubi

Since its release over a century ago, Bram Stoker’s Dracula has inspired many adaptations, but Francis Ford Coppola’s Bram Stoker’s Dracula is often considered the best. Many view it as the most complete and faithful cinematic version of the story. While the film adds a tragic romance between Dracula and Mina Harker—something not found in the original novel—it successfully captures the book’s dark, gothic atmosphere, distinctive visuals, and unique storytelling approach using multiple narrators, a technique often left out of movie adaptations.
Starring Gary Oldman, Winona Ryder, Anthony Hopkins, and Keanu Reeves, the 1992 film is a visually stunning and critically acclaimed reimagining of the Dracula story. It currently has a 69% rating from critics and a 79% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, and is known for its beautiful camerawork, impressive practical effects, and memorable costumes.
7. Hereditary – Tubi

Considered one of the most terrifying films of the 2000s, Ari Aster’s Hereditary is now available to watch for free on Tubi. The psychological horror film, originally released in 2018, began streaming on the platform May 1st.
This film played a key role in bringing sophisticated horror to a wider audience, but it’s about much more than just scares. It deeply explores themes of family, grief, and how trauma is passed down through generations. The story follows the Graham family, who begin experiencing unsettling events after the death of their mother, and they soon discover a dark and unavoidable history. The movie is emotionally challenging, building tension slowly to create a truly unsettling atmosphere that lingers with you long after the credits roll.
6. House At The End Of The Street – Tubi

In 2012, the year Jennifer Lawrence became famous for playing Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games, she also starred in her first horror film, House at the End of the Street. The movie follows Elissa Cassidy, a teenager who discovers a dark secret about her new home – the house next door was the scene of a terrible double murder.
Released on Tubi May 1st, House at the End of the Street is a thrilling and atmospheric horror film that focuses on suspense and surprising turns rather than graphic violence. It’s an engaging mystery that keeps you hooked as the story unfolds, and it’s notable as one of Jennifer Lawrence’s few horror roles (along with Mother!), where she delivers a compelling performance.
5. Lake Placid – Tubi
Monster movies have always been popular in horror, and now you can watch a classic one for free. Starting May 1st, Lake Placid is available to stream on Tubi. Directed by Steve Miner, the film boasts a surprisingly strong cast – including Bill Pullman, Bridget Fonda, Brendan Gleeson, and Oliver Platt – and follows a mismatched group of law enforcement and scientists as they try to stop a giant, man-eating crocodile.
Despite mixed reviews – it only scored 47% from critics and 37% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes – the original 1999 film Lake Placid became a cult favorite thanks to its over-the-top, bloody, and entertaining nature. This success led to five sequels, including Lake Placid: The Final Chapter, which you can currently watch for free on Tubi.
4. Misery – Tubi
When it comes to Stephen King adaptations, Misery consistently ranks among the very best. The 1990 film, directed by Rob Reiner, is a tense and thrilling psychological horror story about obsession. It centers on Annie Wilkes, played by Kathy Bates, who kidnaps author Paul Sheldon (James Caan), leading to a terrifying power struggle.
If you’re a horror fan, you’ll want to check out Misery, now available on Tubi. This classic film features an Oscar-winning performance and explores themes that still resonate today. It’s a gripping story of survival, as the main character tries to escape a dangerous captor after a car accident. While it relies more on building suspense than sudden scares, Misery creates a truly terrifying and claustrophobic experience.
3. The Mist – Tubi

Stephen King truly deserves his title as the King of Horror, and Tubi is celebrating his work with two of his stories! Both Misery and The Mist became available to stream on the platform on the same day.
Frank Darabont’s film, based on Stephen King’s 1980 novel, is arguably one of his most disturbing and powerful stories. It follows a group of people trapped in a supermarket when a strange mist filled with terrifying creatures descends upon a small town in Maine. Though the movie features plenty of frightening moments and impressive monsters, the real horror comes from the growing fear and escalating madness among the survivors as they divide into opposing groups. This culminates in a truly unforgettable and haunting ending that stays with you long after the movie is over.
2. The Silence Of The Lambs – Pluto TV

For a truly chilling and suspenseful psychological thriller, watch The Silence of the Lambs. This 1991 film, based on Thomas Harris’s 1988 novel, features Jodie Foster as a rookie FBI trainee. She’s forced to consult with a brilliant but cannibalistic murderer locked up in prison to help her catch another serial killer who brutally skins his victims.
The Silence of the Lambs is a rare and highly acclaimed film, having won the five major Academy Awards: Best Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, and Screenplay. It truly earned each one. The film expertly combines close, intense visuals with incredible acting, creating a chilling and suspenseful atmosphere through the complex psychological interaction between Clarice Starling and Hannibal Lecter. It’s a cinematic achievement that delivers both the thrills of a crime story and the frightening impact of a horror film.
1. 30 Days Of Night (2007) – Pluto TV

Vampire movies are incredibly popular, and while there are many good ones, few are as truly frightening as 30 Days of Night. Directed by David Slade and featuring Josh Hartnett and Melissa George, the film takes place in the remote Alaskan town of Barrow. There, a small band of people must survive a month of complete darkness while being relentlessly hunted by a vicious group of vampires.
Even though critics and audiences gave 30 Days of Night mixed reviews (50% and 56% respectively on Rotten Tomatoes), it’s a fantastic choice if you’re in the mood for a dark, intense, and truly frightening vampire movie. The vampires in this film are incredibly menacing – some of the scariest ever filmed – and the movie brilliantly uses the Alaskan setting and constant darkness to amplify the horror. Many now consider 30 Days of Night a cult classic, and it even spawned a sequel, 30 Days Of Night: Dark Days, which is also available to stream on Pluto TV.
