10 Major Reveals From The DCU’s First Clayface Trailer

DC Studios recently unveiled the first trailer for Clayface, offering fans a detailed preview of the first villain in the new DC Universe and the heartbreaking story of actor Matt Hagen. Tom Rhys Harries plays Hagen, who begins as a struggling performer in Gotham City. He undergoes a procedure to repair his face, which unexpectedly and horrifically transforms his body into a monstrous form.

Although it’s surprising to see a Clayface movie so early in the new DC Universe after films like Superman and Supergirl, the first trailer shows this one will be very different. It promises a dark and captivating story that James Gunn and DC Studios are clearly passionate about bringing to the screen.

The first teaser for the new Clayface movie is short, but it reveals some important details. Unlike the Joker films starring Joaquin Phoenix, which existed separately, Clayface will be part of the larger, connected DC Universe. Here’s a breakdown of everything we noticed in the first official teaser released by DC Studios.

Every Major Reveal & Key Details In DC Studios’ New Clayface Teaser

A slower, more atmospheric rendition of The Flaming Lips’ song “Do You Realize?” plays in the background, which is particularly poignant given the song’s opening lines: “Do you realize that you have the most beautiful face?” Interestingly, the original version of this song was also featured in the first teaser trailer for Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

The latest preview heavily features Tom Rhys Harries as Matt Hagen, shown bandaged and recovering in a hospital. The footage jumps between scenes of Hagen injured – specifically, being attacked and cut on the face – and glimpses of his life before, like attending a movie premiere. This confirms that before becoming a villain, Hagen was a struggling actor in Gotham City.

As a fan, I noticed some really interesting details in the scenes! They showed a lot of medical equipment – computers, X-rays, and a big injection. It seems like that serum was the experimental stuff they were using on Hagen, hoping to repair the damage to his face. It was cool to see how they were trying to fix him!

The preview shows truly disturbing effects as Matt Hagen’s face grotesquely melts, with his lips and eyes fusing together. The trailer ends with a shocking image of Hagen removing his entire face. It’s clear that the upcoming Clayface movie will be a terrifying body horror experience, relying on a combination of impressive practical effects and digital imagery.

The scene also includes posters for Amusement Mile, a rundown area of Gotham City that appears in the original DC Comics. This section of the city is known as a frequent hideout for many of Gotham’s villains, especially The Joker, who is drawn to the abandoned carnival atmosphere.

One shot shows a Gotham City ferry, and signs clearly label an area as “The Narrows.” This confirms the existence of this older, more dilapidated section of the city. Although now a common part of Gotham in the comics, The Narrows were originally created for the movie Batman Begins.

We’re getting our first glimpse of live-action Gotham City thanks to a recent shot of the Gotham Ferry. Although Gotham was briefly shown in the animated series Creature Commandos – the first installment of the new DCU – this marks the first time we’ve seen Batman’s city realistically portrayed in this interconnected universe.

The latest preview for the Clayface story introduces Naomi Ackie as Caitlyn Corr. Though not a character from the original DC Comics, Corr will be shown as the scientist who provides Matt Hagen with an experimental treatment that allows him to regenerate, and she will also be a significant romantic interest for him.

The recent DC Universe teaser briefly shows a Gotham City police car. Although key Gotham City Police Department characters haven’t been announced, it’s likely the upcoming Clayface movie will feature some recognizable characters from the comics.

In a dark alley, Matt Hagen transforms his arm into a spiked club, a signature move for the Clayface character. This hints that we may see Hagen fully become the large, monstrous clay form seen in the comics and the Creature Commandos animated series, beyond his disguise as a college professor.

Clayface is set to release in theaters on October 23rd from DC Studios.
