The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been creating stories for nearly two decades, and with so many characters introduced since 2008, it’s natural that some have evolved. Many of these heroes and villains have simply moved beyond their initial roles in the franchise.
Characters like Ghost, Shuri, and Bucky Barnes started as part of specific stories, but they’ve evolved significantly over time. These MCU characters aren’t the same as when we first met them. Through experiences like overcoming challenges, finding acceptance, and dealing with loss, they’ve undergone real and lasting changes.
Monica Rambeau Is A Cosmic Hero Now
Growing up, she had connections to the world of superheroes thanks to her mother’s close relationship with Captain Marvel. When her mother, Maria, started S.W.O.R.D., she joined the organization. This eventually led to her developing superpowers, as she repeatedly entered Wanda’s reality-altering Hex during her missions, which changed her cells.
Monica Rambeau only briefly experienced life as a superhero in The Marvels before making a huge sacrifice to repair a tear in the Multiverse. This transported her to the world of the X-Men, and many fans now think she’ll play a crucial role in resolving the conflicts in Avengers: Secret Wars. She’s come a long way from being a government agent’s daughter and a supporting character – she’s now a powerful cosmic warrior herself.
Ghost Became A New Avenger
Ava Starr, known as Ghost, was initially presented as a villain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, her actions stemmed from a desperate need to stabilize her body, which had become unstable after years of being experimented on by S.H.I.E.L.D. This drove her into conflict with Ant-Man and the Wasp until Janet van Dyne offered a solution.
Ava had a rough start. Without family or a stable job, she turned to mercenary work. Her life took a turn when Valentina Allegra de Fontaine attempted to kill her, leading her to join the New Avengers and ultimately help save the world from the Void. Now, she’s poised to be a key hero in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, a surprising leap forward in her role within the franchise.
Nebula Helps Other Kids Like No One Helped Her
Nebula first appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe much like her comic book counterpart – as a supporting villain for the Guardians of the Galaxy, frequently clashing with her sister and enemy, Gamora. But viewers quickly realized Nebula wasn’t truly a villain. She had been raised by Thanos to commit crimes, but as soon as she had the opportunity to turn things around, she did.
After fighting with the Guardians for a time, she decided to remain on Knowhere with Drax, dedicating herself to raising the children they rescued from the High Evolutionary. She’s moved past her own difficult childhood and is now focused on helping others who have experienced similar trauma.
Writers Don’t Know What to Do With Sharon Carter
Sharon Carter started as a love interest for Captain America and a helper against the villainous organization Hydra within S.H.I.E.L.D. But after the events of the Blip, her story took a turn. Unlike many characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe who developed and improved over time, many fans feel Marvel Studios didn’t treat Sharon’s character fairly.
Sharon ultimately became the Power Broker, but many viewers felt the story arc didn’t really add up. Considering it didn’t go anywhere after her appearance in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, it’s clear her character’s potential was unfortunately wasted.
Bruce Banner Is No Longer Afraid of Losing Control
The Hulk’s journey in the Marvel Cinematic Universe hasn’t been easy, beginning with a change of actors and a lot of unrealized potential during his time with the Avengers. But it’s clear he’s evolved since his introduction. When we first met Bruce Banner in The Incredible Hulk, he was struggling to control his transformations and lived in isolation to protect others from his anger.
With the help of the Avengers, Bruce Banner finally learned to control the Hulk, making him a powerful asset to the team. By using his intelligence and access to advanced technology, Bruce was able to manage the Hulk’s immense strength. He successfully integrated his mind with the Hulk’s physical power, eliminating his fear of losing control. Although some fans are disappointed the Hulk seems less powerful now, Bruce is happier and more at peace than he’s been since the accident that created him.
Yondu Udonta Died A Hero
When Yondu first appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he seemed like a typical criminal. He’d even been kicked out of the Ravagers for helping Ego collect children for his selfish scheme. Everyone assumed he was a morally questionable space pirate, but it turned out Yondu was a good person at heart. That’s why he ultimately protected Peter Quill instead of handing him over to Ego.
Initially dismissed, this Ravager eventually became a key ally after joining forces with the Guardians of the Galaxy. He ultimately gave his life to save the team, and especially Peter Quill. His funeral was well-attended by fellow Ravagers, marking his transformation from an outcast to a celebrated hero across the cosmos.
Shuri Became the New Black Panther
I first met Shuri in the MCU as T’Challa’s little sister – you know, Black Panther. Even as a teenager, she wasn’t some helpless character waiting to be rescued. Honestly, she was brilliant! She was the brains behind a lot of what T’Challa did, basically his tech support and strategist. It was amazing to watch their dynamic. But sadly, things took a really tough turn for her down the line.
As a huge fan, I was really moved by Shuri’s journey after T’Challa’s passing. It was incredibly tough watching her grieve for both her brother and her mother, but then step up to become the new Black Panther. She went from being the brilliant mind supporting Black Panther to being the hero herself. While she was always capable, it’s clear she’s become even more powerful through everything she’s faced. It’s a really powerful arc!
Scarlet Witch Had A Very Complex Personal Journey
I still remember when the Scarlet Witch first appeared in Avengers: Age of Ultron! It’s amazing looking back because her introduction was so different from the powerful hero she’d become. She started as this young woman from Sokovia, deeply affected by the bombings in Novi Grad, and sadly, she and her brother Pietro ended up working with Hydra. They were experimented on, hoping to gain the power to fight the Avengers. But then she met those heroes, and it completely changed her. She realized Hydra was the real enemy and bravely switched sides to fight with them. It’s a truly compelling origin story.
After losing her boyfriend, Vision, to Thanos, Wanda was devastated and unexpectedly unlocked powerful abilities. Driven by a desperate desire to rebuild her family, she turned to a dangerous book called the Darkhold, which ultimately led to her downfall and, reportedly, her death as she tried to fix her mistakes. From a young soldier to a tragic villain, the Scarlet Witch’s story is one of the most intense and emotionally challenging arcs in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Bucky Barnes Dabbles In Politics Now
Fans of the comics knew something was coming when Bucky Barnes seemingly died as Steve Rogers’ friend in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The movie Captain America: The Winter Soldier then revealed what many suspected: Bucky would become the Winter Soldier. Captain America managed to save him, but Bucky had a hard time dealing with the things he did while under mind control. Eventually, he found a way to forgive himself and became a hero.
Bucky Barnes’ journey in the Marvel Cinematic Universe closely followed his comic book background, so his reveal as the Winter Soldier wasn’t a huge shock to fans. However, his path to redemption has included some unexpected twists. The recent developments in Thunderbolts, for instance, were surprising. Seeing the once-troubled Bucky, the man Steve Rogers rescued, find peace and become a positive force in his community has been genuinely heartwarming for audiences.
Loki Went from Villain to Ultimate Hero
Loki has arguably the most compelling character arc in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He started as Thor’s mischievous and envious brother, even attempting to conquer Earth to claim the throne. After being imprisoned for his actions, he received an unexpected opportunity for redemption during the Avengers’ time travel mission. Instead of joining the fight, he seized the moment and broke free.
When Loki broke from his established timeline, the Time Variance Authority (TVA) took notice and he became involved with their secretive organization. Working with Mobius, he learned about his true calling: maintaining the stability of reality itself. Quite a change for someone who used to be a self-centered troublemaker!
