Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball, with its impressive 40-year history, stands among the oldest and most renowned anime and manga franchises globally. Initially, Toei Animation transformed the original manga into two significant sections: Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z. In Dragon Ball Z, which unfolds after a time jump, Goku is married to Chi Chi and has a son named Gohan who is four years old. While Dragon Ball laid the groundwork for the narrative, it was Dragon Ball Z that catapulted the franchise into international fame. Focusing on more high-octane action sequences and unforgettable characters, Dragon Ball Z escalated the tension as the Z warriors encountered formidable enemies who threatened to annihilate the world.
The allure of Dragon Ball resides in exhilarating battles that test the heroes’ limits, as they face off against formidable foes. In Dragon Ball Z, there are four primary story arcs, with Goku and his companions continually growing stronger after each confrontation with a powerful enemy. Among the numerous adversaries presented in DBZ, these ten are often recognized as the most powerful, with some additional characters gaining this status through movies or other media, such as Dragon Ball Super, where their strength is further established.
10) Frieza
In a simpler, more conversational style:
Frieza was known as a ruthless ruler of the universe, causing trouble for characters like Goku during the Namek Saga. However, his immense power can be attributed to the fact that he hadn’t encountered a Super Saiyan, an extraordinary ability unique to the Saiyan race. Even Frieza’s strongest form couldn’t stand against Super Saiyan Goku.
Fast forward to when Future Trunks traveled back in time, he effortlessly defeated Frieza who barely managed to survive his battle with Goku. Though Frieza grew stronger in Dragon Ball Super, he was significantly weaker compared to the villains that emerged after the Frieza Saga in the original Dragon Ball Z series.
9) Android 19
In simpler terms, Dr. Gero designed Android 19, the first character in the Android series to make an appearance. Unlike 17 and 18 who were originally humans, Android 19 is a completely synthetic entity. He possesses the ability to absorb energy from others, which not only drains his opponents but also recharges him. He was able to outmatch all Z Warriors, even a Saiyan Goku weakened by a virus. However, Super Saiyan Vegeta ultimately defeated Android 19.
8) Dr. Gero
First appearing as Android 20 on-screen, his striking similarity to the Red Ribbon Army’s brilliant cyborg and android inventor was hard to miss. This likeness quickly caught the attention of fans, revealing a major villain from the background of the original Dragon Ball series. Although he exhibited even more terrifying abilities than Android 19, Android 20 still possessed his original intellect. He could also absorb energy from the Z Fighters, making his power potentially stronger than Android 19’s, with or without energy absorption. However, both androids were eventually outmatched by the Z Fighters. Yet, their destructive impact on the world demonstrated that Gero should not be underestimated. The dangers that emerged after Gero were primarily due to his animosity and compulsive study of his adversaries – Earth’s protectors.
7) Android 18
In the Cell Saga, Android 18 initially appeared as a villain, having been crafted by Dr. Gero as part of his plot against Goku alongside her younger twin brother. Despite sharing similar origins, the power levels between them are strikingly different – Android 18 possesses such immense strength that she can easily overpower Vegeta in his Super Saiyan form. Even Future Trunks, powerful as he is, needed to train with Vegeta within the Hyperbolic Time Chamber to stand a chance against Android 18 in an alternate timeline, where her power was noticeably lower compared to the main timeline.
6) Android 17
I, as an observer, noticed that much like myself at the age of 18, Android 17 underwent a significant change post the Cell Saga. He proved to be quite formidable from his very debut, causing the Z Warriors some serious trouble. In the primary timeline, he engaged in a fierce battle with Piccolo, who had grown considerably stronger after fusing with Kami. However, their encounter was abruptly halted due to the arrival of Cell. In an alternate reality, Future Trunks managed to subdue both Android 17 and 18 following his grueling training within the Hyperbolic Time Chamber.
5) Dabura
The Demon race’s Most Powerful Ruler faces formidable opposition, but regrettably succumbs to Babidi’s enchantment, making him obey the sorcerer’s orders. Strangely, this spell amplified Dabura’s power, which he displayed during his battle with Gohan. Unfortunately for Gohan, who underestimated the difficulty of facing a veteran fighter like Dabura due to his lack of extensive training. In a swift moment, Dabura meets his end when Majin Buu turns him into a cookie using his Candy Beam and then consumes him.
4) Cell
The character is engineered with many advantageous genetic qualities and exceptional skills of characters like Goku and other Z warriors. From the moment he appeared, he kept getting stronger by assimilating an increasing number of humans. Eventually, after absorbing Androids 17 and 18, he transforms into his ultimate form, “Perfect Cell.” Before this transformation, he was already powerful; however, upon achieving his true form, he becomes nearly invincible. Goku confesses that he can’t defeat the antagonist alone, but his son Gohan, who possesses half-Saiyan strength, is crucial for the final victory.
3) Broly
Back in the day, I stumbled upon Broly – this non-canon powerhouse character from the Dragon Ball Z films. Fast forward to 2018, and legendary mangaka Akira Toriyama breathed new life into him with Dragon Ball Super: Broly. Known as the Legendary Super Saiyan, he’s one of the most memorable movie villains in the Dragon Ball Z universe, starring in classics like Broly – The Legendary Super Saiyan, Broly – Second Coming, and Bio-Broly. Born with an off-the-charts power level that skyrockets in battle, his Legendary Super Saiyan form packs a punch with unmatched strength, tireless stamina, and energy blasts so powerful they can annihilate entire planets!
2) Kid Buu
Instead of Majin Buu, Kid Buu represents pure evil as an embodiment of an ancient being. During an attempt by Majin Buu to heal Mr. Satan and his dog Bee, Kid Buu managed to split apart from his counterpart, increasing in strength significantly. Unlike Majin Buu who acts impulsively like a child having a tantrum, Kid Buu’s actions are methodical, driven solely by destruction and chaos without any specific motivation. One of the most iconic moments in the Dragon Ball series is when Goku uses a massive spirit bomb fueled with Earth’s energy to defeat Kid Buu, effectively preventing regeneration and restoring peace temporarily on Earth.
1) Beerus
In the “Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods” movie, Beerus made his debut, eventually rising to prominence as a key figure in “Dragon Ball Super”. This solidified his status as part of the ongoing storyline’s canon. As the God of Destruction for Universe 7, Beerus is one of the story’s most powerful gods. His responsibility is to preserve the universe’s equilibrium by eliminating planets, civilizations, and any forces that disturb cosmic harmony. After having a vision of the Super Saiyan God, he embarked on a quest to find this entity who could challenge him effectively.
In a surprising shift, Beerus transforms from an antagonist in the final movie of Dragon Ball Z to a more intricate side character in Dragon Ball Super. Despite his initial role, he becomes surprisingly endearing and easy to connect with. His feline traits and fondness for pudding resonate with fans much like Innocent Buu did. Yet, Beerus’ immense power should not be underestimated; it serves as a foundation for the creation of powerful characters in Toriyama and Toyotarou’s sequel series.
