Computer-generated imagery is amazing – it can transform actors into anything from monsters and aliens to cosmic beings. However, nothing beats seeing an actor truly embody a character. While CGI can convincingly create inhuman transformations, it struggles to realistically portray changes to an actor’s body while still maintaining a human performance. An actor’s dedication to physically transforming themselves – losing or gaining weight, for example – feels much more authentic and impactful.
It’s common for actors preparing for superhero roles to get into incredible shape. Even established stars like Henry Cavill bulk up for roles like Superman. However, some actors have gone to extreme lengths, completely transforming their bodies – and often repeating the process for different roles.
10) Kumail Nanjiani for Eternals

While the movie Eternals wasn’t a hit with viewers, the cast and director Chloé Zhao were clearly dedicated to the project. Kumail Nanjiani, in particular, underwent a significant physical transformation for his role as Kingo, looking drastically different than his character Dinesh from Silicon Valley.
Kumail Nanjiani, known for co-writing the heartwarming film The Big Sick with his wife Emily V. Gordon, underwent a significant physical transformation for a recent role. Over ten months, he gained 25 pounds of muscle and reduced his body fat to just 10%.
9) Jake Gyllenhaal for Nightcrawler & Southpaw

To convincingly portray Lou Bloom in the 2013 film Nightcrawler, Jake Gyllenhaal lost approximately 30 pounds. He achieved this through a strict diet of kale salads and gum, combined with daily 15-mile runs to create the character’s gaunt appearance.
By the time Jake Gyllenhaal filmed Southpaw eight months later, he’d dramatically changed his physique. He’d gained around eighteen pounds of muscle through an intense training schedule that included six hours of daily workouts – everything from 2,000 sit-ups and boxing to weightlifting and eight-mile runs.
8) Joaquin Phoenix for Joker

Joaquin Phoenix is a dedicated actor known for giving unique performances every time. He’s incredibly versatile, though he doesn’t physically transform himself as often or as extremely as the actor we rank as number one, who is also known for completely changing their appearance for roles.
Joaquin Phoenix lost a significant amount of weight – 52 pounds – for his role in Joker. He did this by severely restricting his diet to just 500 calories a day, mainly eating lettuce and steamed vegetables. While it was emotionally difficult for him, the transformation was effective, and Arthur’s thin appearance successfully conveyed the character’s vulnerability and worried audiences.
7) Natalie Portman & Mila Kunis for Black Swan

Natalie Portman was already in good shape, but she pushed herself through intense training to play Nina Sayers in Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan. Both she and Mila Kunis spent six months preparing before filming began.
Let me tell you, both Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis really committed to getting in shape for this movie. Natalie was a machine – five hours a day of ballet, plus cross-training and swimming! Then she started learning all the dance choreography. Mila took a different approach, focusing on cardio and Pilates for five hours a day, every day, for almost six months. And get this – she was only eating 1,200 calories a day while doing it! Talk about dedication.
6) Chris Pratt for Guardians of the Galaxy

Similar to Kumail Nanjiani, Chris Pratt started out as a comedic actor. He also made a big physical transformation to play a believable superhero in the Marvel film Guardians of the Galaxy.
Actor Chris Pratt, known for his role in Parks and Recreation, lost 60 pounds in just six months, dropping from around 250 to 190-195 pounds and reaching about 10% body fat. He accomplished this through a combination of swimming, a disciplined diet, the P90X workout program, and cardio. His weight loss was even playfully referenced on an episode of Parks and Recreation, where his character, Andy, simply stopped drinking beer.
5) Jonah Hill for 21 Jump Street & War Dogs

Jonah Hill has transformed his physique recently, becoming much leaner. Some people haven’t even recognized him in promotional photos for his new movie, Outcome, where he stars with Keanu Reeves. Many fans remember him as being larger, particularly when he first became famous with Superbad.
Right now, Jonah Hill prioritizes his health over physical transformations for roles. However, he’s changed his body significantly for past projects – he lost 30 pounds for 21 Jump Street and gained 40 pounds for War Dogs.
4) Charlize Theron for Monster

In the same year she appeared in The Italian Job, Charlize Theron delivered her Academy Award-winning performance as serial killer Aileen Carol Wuornos. The role was widely praised as a turning point in her career, both for the depth of her portrayal and her remarkable physical transformation, which set it apart from all her other work.
Charlize Theron gained 30 pounds, mostly from eating processed and sugary foods, to prepare for her role as Wuornos. The combination of weight gain, makeup, and prosthetics made her almost unidentifiable. However, her biggest weight gain for a role was for the 2018 film Tully, where she gained 50 pounds.
3) Michael Fassbender for Hunger

Michael Fassbender dramatically changed his physique for his roles. He got very muscular for the film 300 in 2006, but just two years later, he became extremely thin for his powerful performance in Hunger. That film tells the story of Bobby Sands, an Irish Republican Army member who died in prison at age 27 after refusing to eat during a hunger strike. He was imprisoned at HM Prison Maze.
To accurately play the role of Sands, Michael Fassbender lost over 40 pounds, dropping his weight to just 128 pounds. He ate a diet of sardines, nuts, and berries every day to achieve this.
2) Matthew McConaughey & Jared Leto for Dallas Buyers Club

Matthew McConaughey lost over 50 pounds to prepare for his role as Ron Woodroof in Dallas Buyers Club. The character contracted HIV, and to achieve the physical transformation, McConaughey reportedly ate mostly fish and tapioca pudding while still allowing himself to drink wine, according to Business Insider.
Jared Leto lost around 40 pounds—dropping to just 114 pounds—to prepare for his Oscar-winning role in Rayon. When CNN asked him how he did it, he simply stated, “I stopped eating.”
1) Christian Bale for The Machinist, Batman Begins, The Fighter, etc.

Christian Bale is well-known for dramatically changing his body for his movie roles, a practice that started with films like American Psycho in 2000, where he gained muscle through a strict protein diet. However, his most impressive physical transformations came with back-to-back roles in The Machinist (2004) and Batman Begins (2005).
Christian Bale underwent a dramatic physical transformation for the film The Machinist, dropping over 60 pounds to reach a weight of only 120 pounds. His diet consisted of just water, an apple, and a single cup of coffee each day, and he also smoked heavily and drank whiskey to achieve this extreme weight loss. While incredibly unhealthy, the results were striking on screen. Remarkably, just six months later, he began filming his first Batman movie, requiring him to gain 100 pounds of muscle.
Christian Bale is famous for dramatically changing his body for roles, and he’s done it many times. He lost and gained weight repeatedly over two decades for films like Rescue Dawn, The Dark Knight, The Fighter, The Dark Knight Rises, American Hustle (where he famously ate doughnuts and cheeseburgers!), Exodus: Gods and Kings, and Vice. Thankfully, it seems he’s stopped these extreme transformations recently, which is likely a good thing for his health, as constantly gaining and losing such significant weight must be hard on the body.
