It was a great era for being… well, undead! In 2003, Kate Beckinsale launched a hugely memorable film franchise with her role in a vampire horror movie, forever changing the genre.
Despite ongoing fan demand for a new movie after ten years, the chances of another installment appear slim. This isn’t just speculation or typical studio hesitation – the news is quite definitive.
The news comes straight from Kate Beckinsale, the actress famous for playing the vampire-turned-vampire-hunter in the Underworld series. When asked if the franchise might return in 2026 or later, she firmly shut down the possibility, just as her character once dispatched Viktor.
Kate Beckinsale explained on Instagram that she won’t be returning to the Underworld franchise. She said she doesn’t feel comfortable working with the current owners due to serious and unacceptable behavior. While she enjoyed her time with the series, she doesn’t see a path forward under the current circumstances.
Kate Beckinsale Leaves the Underworld, But Is It Over?
Will there ever be another Underworld movie? That’s still uncertain. But if a new film does appear in theaters or on streaming, Kate Beckinsale won’t be starring in it—which is a real letdown, considering she’s become the most recognizable face of the entire series, even with all the different actors who’ve been involved.
The 2003 film Underworld was a turning point for Kate Beckinsale, establishing her as a leading action star and revitalizing the vampire and werewolf genres. Its success led to three sequels: Underworld: Evolution (2006), Underworld: Awakening (2012), and Underworld: Blood Wars (2016). The film cleverly combined the visual style of The Matrix with a fresh story, and also featured Scott Speedman as Michael Corvin.
Kate Beckinsale’s character, Serene, was driven by love to fight against her own people, even though she was naturally violent, all to protect the man she cared for. However, despite her efforts, the Underworld movie series seems destined for the outcome the actress herself has already established.
The series could continue, but only if a new story emerges, focusing on Eve, the daughter of Selene and Michael Corvin, played by India Eisley, and moving the franchise forward. However, don’t expect to see Kate Beckinsale reprise her role in any future Underworld movies, even for a brief appearance.
