I’m completely hooked on Stranger Things, and I’ve been trying to piece together what’s going to happen in the final season! It’s amazing how much they’ve finally revealed – after all this time, we know the Upside Down isn’t just a creepy alternate world, but actually a connection between dimensions, like a wormhole. And it’s terrifying to realize Vecna’s plan is to completely merge Hawkins with that dark place, which would be absolutely devastating.
The kids from Hawkins have come up with a risky plan to stop Vecna, and precise timing is crucial. They need to wait until the merging of worlds is nearly finished before they can attempt to strike quickly and disrupt Number One’s scheme. Everyone realizes this mission is incredibly dangerous – Dustin and Steve even agreed to face it together, no matter the cost, while Kali and Eleven are planning to stay behind. It’s likely some of this is a distraction… but what ideas and hints have fans discovered so far?
1. We Finally Know Why There’s Red Lightning in the Upside Down

Fans have noticed a curious detail in Season 5, Volume 2: the strange red lightning in the Upside Down actually serves a purpose. It turns out these flashes are caused by a unique substance that keeps the portal between worlds stable. It seems there’s a specific pattern to these flares – Eleven discovered about a seven-second delay between the flash and the accompanying sound, suggesting the substance flares roughly 1.5 miles above the ground.
If our understanding is right, the kids’ plan has a serious flaw. As the gateway between worlds closes, they’ll have to navigate a dangerous layer of strange material first – the same material we’ve already seen can be incredibly harmful. This means the mission could be deadly even before they reach the other dimension or confront Vecna.
2. The Exotic Matter Has Already Been Disturbed Before

The strange substance has definitely been disturbed in the past. We know this because when some of our team entered the Upside Down and infiltrated Hawkins Lab, they found melted material and soldiers frozen inside it. It seems likely those soldiers came into contact with the substance, and it unfortunately killed them.
This latest discovery has thrown a wrench into our plans, honestly. We’re trying to stop Vecna and then detonate a bomb to destroy the weird stuff powering the Upside Down’s wormhole, hoping to finally close it for good. But it’s not going to be simple – apparently, this strange material has somehow managed to stabilize itself a couple of times already, so we’re worried it won’t just be destroyed by the explosion.
3. Why is November 6 So Important?

Lucas is correct to think November 6th is significant to Vecna, though the reason remains a mystery. While some fans speculate it relates to astronomical events, the date might be personally important to Vecna, tied to events in his own life. We saw a key memory of his childhood in Hawkins culminate in a play on November 6, 1959, and it seems too intentional to be a coincidence – it’s likely a crucial clue.
4. Vecna’s Memories are the Key to Everything

Vecna’s memories are going to be crucial to understanding how the story ends. These memories connect to Stranger Things: The First Shadow, a Broadway play that most fans haven’t been able to see. In the second part of the season, Max and Holly witnessed a flashback showing young Henry Creel’s first encounter with the Upside Down, and it seems likely that the complete memories will reveal a significant surprise.
5. Time Travel Will (Still) Be A Big Part of the Finale

The final season of Stranger Things might actually feature time travel. Earlier in the series, Mr. Clarke explained wormholes, which could be crucial to the plot of Season 5 – it turns out the Upside Down might be one! He also mentioned time travel is theoretically possible through wormholes. With consistent nods to stories like A Wrinkle in Time and Back to the Future, it wouldn’t be shocking if time travel becomes a reality in the show.
6. There’s a Reason Vecna Chose These 12 Kids

Vecna has selected twelve children to serve as his hosts, a deliberate echo of Jesus and his twelve disciples. The reason behind choosing these particular children, and limiting the number to twelve, likely stems from Vecna’s claim that they possess hidden powers. He probably intends to awaken these abilities by exposing them to the particles of the Mind Flayer.
The US military is having trouble creating people with special abilities, and Kali thinks Henry and Eleven’s unique blood might be the reason some are more powerful. However, a more likely explanation is that very few people naturally have the potential for these powers. Vecna proved he could unlock powers in people like Will back in Season 1 – though sadly, Barb didn’t make it. Now, Vecna has learned how to find children who do have this potential, and that’s why he’s been kidnapping them. This could also explain why he waited so long – he was carefully searching for the right individuals.
7. Holly Really Does Become “Holly the Heroic”

In the first volume of the show, Max’s gift, “Holly the Heroic,” felt like a hint of things to come, and it still makes sense today. This is likely because the creators, the Duffer brothers, have often taken ideas from X-Men comics. Holly is very similar to a character named Magik – a blonde, younger sister of a hero who is kidnapped and taken to a hellish dimension by a demon. The connection between the two is quite obvious.
The theory suggests that Holly, and maybe some of the other children who were taken, will start developing special abilities in the final season of Stranger Things. Even though Holly lost her protective charm during an attack, she realized she doesn’t actually need it – Max explained that the power was inside her all along. This could mean we’re about to see a new group of incredibly powerful individuals emerge.
8. Holly Will Betray Vecna & Save the Day

I’ve been reading a really interesting theory about Season 5 of Stranger Things. It suggests the kidnapped kids represent Jesus and his disciples, which means Holly could be playing the role of Judas! Apparently, the idea is she’ll be the one to ultimately defeat Vecna, but by betraying him to Eleven and the others. It’s a cool twist because, in this case, ‘Judas’ is the one who ends up saving everyone.
9. Eleven Will “Share” Vecna’s Mind

Season 5 of Stranger Things reintroduced Kali, Eleven’s long-lost sister, and it’s apparent she has her own plans. In a memorable moment, Kali explains that people with powers like theirs can connect their minds – possibly through the same ability Vecna used to build Camazotz. Many fans believe this means Eleven will eventually enter Vecna’s mind, having a private psychic conversation with him that no one else can witness.
10. The Mind Flayer is Stranger Things’ Real Villain

Fans have noticed the Mind Flayer hasn’t been around much in the upcoming fifth season of Stranger Things. While Vecna said he created the Mind Flayer in season four, a new discovery casts doubt on that story. The prequel play, The First Shadow, reveals a young Henry Creel encountering the Mind Flayer in Nevada, which doesn’t align with Vecna’s explanation. This has led to a theory that the Mind Flayer is the original villain, and Vecna might just be working for it – something the Duffer brothers hinted at before season four.
11. Vecna is Trying to Kill the Mind Flayer

Could Vecna actually be fighting against the Mind Flayer, not with it? The show described Camazotz as Vecna’s prison, which raises the possibility that the Mind Flayer is the one holding him captive. Interestingly, in A Wrinkle in Time, Camazotz is controlled by a mysterious entity called IT – and the Mind Flayer could very well be IT. Vecna might even have been telling the truth when he claimed he was trying to destroy a shadow monster. If this is the case, the ending of Stranger Things could completely change everything, turning Vecna from a villain into an unexpected ally.
